CalFresh Healthy Living, UC in Action!

Youth-Led Nutrition Corners, UCCE Tulare

The Student Nutrition Action Council (SNAC) teams at Alila, Wilson, and Roosevelt Elementary Schools led nutrtion corner projects to amp up their school cafeterias!

The SNAC teams brainstormed different themes and ultimately came up with unique ideas while incorporating key nutrition messages. Alila Elementary SNAC team came up with the idea of including their school mascot, the eagle and using the phrase “Be Eagle-rrific eat your fruits and vegetables!”. The Wilson SNAC team wanted to incorporate a carnival theme to their nutrtion corner and decided to have a rollercoaster and ferris wheel made out of fruits and vegetables encouraging their school to “Take a ride to the fruit and veggies side to Warriorland”. Lastly, Roosevelt SNAC team wanted to incorporate a popular video game called, “Fortnite” and included the characters in the game to represent each MyPlate food group.

Involving the SNAC students in creating their school’s nutrition corner allowed them to think creatively and create something that is appealing to all students. Once the nutrition corners were posted and as students entered the cafeteria, the SNAC students were quick to state, “Look what we made! We did this!”. Students were excited to see what their classmates had created. Each SNAC team took initiative demonstrated leadership to accomplish their nutrition corner project, which ultimately makes each of these nutrition corners that much more meaningful.

Check out the awesome pictures of the nutrition corners below!
