Superintendent Search Update

After a search that included candidates from throughout the United States, the Santa Clara Unified School District Board of Trustees is pleased to announce their vote to appoint Dr. Stella M. Kemp as the new superintendent of Santa Clara Unified School District (SCUSD). Dr. Kemp, who currently serves as the superintendent of San Bruno Park School District, comes to the district with over 30 years of experience in public education, including experience in Texas, Germany, and California.

Regarding her appointment, Dr. Kemp says, “I'm excited to join the Santa Clara Unified family, meet everyone, and do my part to continue the upward momentum of the district! I know that high-quality educational programs that prepare our students with the competencies and skills for an ever-changing world and workplace are a priority for the district. As the new superintendent, I call on you to engage with me in these partnerships to create a common vision for our students.”

She adds, “I know that it is especially important to SCUSD that we honor the trust of our community to provide for new, modern learning places for our students. In this regard, we must ensure we are always good stewards of the public’s funds for our opportunity to create 21st-century teaching and learning spaces. As the new superintendent, I am excited and ready to work with you to accomplish those goals.”

Board President Dr. Michele Ryan notes, “We are grateful that the district is in a place to attract a candidate of Dr. Kemp’s caliber to continue our work in building a world-class school district. We heard clearly from the community that they wanted the new superintendent to be a dynamic educational leader who has experience setting and implementing a vision for schools and who puts students first. Dr. Kemp’s demonstrated success as a teacher, site administrator, assistant superintendent for educational services, and superintendent uniquely qualifies her for the position of superintendent in Santa Clara Unified. In addition, her doctoral dissertation centered on school governance and improving student achievement. The Board and I are very excited to welcome Dr. Kemp to the SCUSD family.”

This appointment comes after a months-long community feedback and candidate search process the Board began earlier this year when the current superintendent, Dr. Stan Rose, announced his planned retirement for the end of the school year.

Dr. Rose says, “I have been honored to serve Santa Clara Unified’s students and families alongside some of the best educational leaders out there. Our community, the students we serve, and their needs are diverse. Our students are inspirational! We have achieved great things together as a community. Santa Clara Unified welcomes Dr. Kemp and I wish her nothing but continued success with our incredible students, families, and staff!”

Dr. Kemp will become the superintendent of Santa Clara Unified School District on July 1, 2019. The current superintendent, Dr. Stanley Rose, will retire on June 30, 2019, after 46 years of work in education and six years in the district.
