WAGASHI WORKSHOP

June 20th
5:30PM - 7:30PM

Learn to make wagashi, traditional Japanese sweets served during a tea ceremony, with author and Professor Emeritus, Kimiko Gunji.

Japan House released “The Art of Wagashi: Recipes for Japanese Sweets that Delight the Palate and the Eyes” in April, and since then customers from around the world have been ordering the cookbook to learn more about this unique art form.

Join us as we host a hands-on workshop to hone your wagashi making skills! Guests will be introduced to some of the basic techniques to start, then will practice advanced wagashi making skills.

Seasonal favorites of kingyokukan (summer jelly), chatsu (green tea baked bun) and ichigo daifuku (rice cake with red bean paste and strawberry) will be made.
Guests will be served tea along with the sweets to enjoy at the end of class. Cookbooks will be available for purchase ($38 plus tax), or bring in your already-purchased wagashi cookbooks to be signed by the author.

No experience required.
Spaces are limited. Please reserve your tickets at this link - https://japanhouse.illinois.edu/events
JAPANESE STREET FOOD & SAKE

June 28th
5:00PM - 7:30PM

Some of the best food in Japan can be found at festivals. If you can't make it there this summer, you can come to Japan House for Japanese Street Food & Sake! Put on your yukata or favorite summer outfit and join us at our last event of the school year before we close for Summer Break (July and August).

Guests will be greeted with a refreshing sake cocktail and a passport that will guide you through four food stations provided by Michael's Catering and Japan House Staff.

Featuring street food favorites like Yakitori (Grilled Chicken Skewer), Takoyaki (Octopus Beignet with Sweet Teriyaki), and Hashimaki (Okonomiyaki on a stick), as well as an Omusubi station (Rice Triangles) with a variety of toppings, paired with unique sake at each station.

Once your passport is stamped at all of the stations, you will receive a wagashi to-go (Japanese Sweet) and special coupon for this year's Matsuri Festival held on Sunday September 8th.
