Title: Wildfire Emergency Planning for Individuals and Families

Most everyone has heard of creating "defensible space" to reduce the risk of wildfire, and we know what we should be doing to prepare for an evacuation like they had in Paradise, but are you actually DOING it? It's easy to procrastinate! This Powerpoint program, which has received an excellent response from other groups that have seen it, will provide tips and suggestions for motivating yourself to actually get the work done. A few less-common ideas and suggestions to reduce stress and increase your chances of surviving the unimaginable will be included.

Susan Rogers, a BPWNC member for more than 15 years, is on the Partnership Education Committee of the Fire Safe Council and is Vice Chair of the Coalition of Firewise Communities. She is also on the Editorial Board of The Union newspaper.

President’s Message

~Shirley Zeff

This is my goodbye message as Co-President.  It’s been two years and they have flown by.  I believe I have grown during this process even though I lack the innate leadership qualities some women have.  I have continued to have an impulse to start singing every time I pick up the microphone but generally can carry on with business even after some of our speakers have brought me to tears.

Our organization has challenges that are not unique to us.  Many groups have trouble finding people to fill positions and take on leadership roles.  We have great talented members with enthusiasm for our mission but we still need people to take on roles as facilitators or coordinators.  Many other groups have embraced the co-leadership positions as a way to split the work and provide support for each other in our busy lives.  I think this works well and we encourage members to think of people they would like to share a job with.   Please think of how you might fit your talents and passions into our group.

I’d like to thank the stalwart board members for putting up with me these past two years.  Shannon Cotter, Shirley Hall, Mary Sivila – you know I couldn’t have done it without you.  Susan Rogers, Lynn Wenzel and Judy McCarrick are some of the wisest women a person could ever have on her team.  Lindy Horowitz just does what needs to be done and always does it well.  Patricia Wolfe has been our social media person and keeps our name and our message out there.  Elaine Sierra is our legislative expert and brings great energy to keeping our legislators informed of our advocacy for women.  This year’s program co-chairs, Shanti Emerson and Boni LaValley brought us wonderful speakers and program ideas.  Deb LeBlanc started bringing her energy and ideas to the board meetings even before she began her term as membership chair.  I have truly enjoyed my terms on the board and I look forward to continuing to serve as needed throughout the years.

Going Forward!
Shirley Zeff.
