Any River... Anytime℠

Hello Fly Anglers,

June has just started and with it the largest mayflies of the year are beginning to show. Drakes, Isonychias, and Hexes all bring up the largest trout of the season! This is the time of year that full time guides look like they've been on a three day binge, employers have a larger number of sick or vacation days taken, and our spouses feel like we've lost our minds!

Much of the action with our largest mayflies is at, or after dark. Read the article below. It has tips and techniques for fly fishing after dark.

As a reminder I've left in a video from the last newsletter showing how I use needle threaders to get the tippet through the hook eyes after dark. I have found the trick very useful after dark.

Also we have two fly patterns that are great this time of year, Ed's Grey Drake Spinner and Steve's Quigley Cripple.

2019 has started off very well so far. The spring steelhead run was better than it has been in recent years. When the water temperatures have been stable the resident trout fishing has been very good this year. The cold winter doesn't appear to have had a large effect on the trout populations. Hopefully summer smallmouth and fall salmon and steelhead will continue the trend.

Remember that June trout, Sept salmon and Oct/Nov steelhead are our highest demand months. If you want days in these time frames now is the time to call. We are 90+% booked already.

As always thank you, our customers, for your continued support. It is greatly appreciated. See you out there on Any River...Anytime!

Capt. Chuck

Grey Drakes have started!

Real McCoy Grey Drake Spinner

The Grey Drakes have started on the Pere Marquette and other rivers. As most of you know Grey Drakes climb out of the water to hatch so they are only available to trout on the surface as spinners. Look for the hatchers to climb out in grassy areas and the spinners to accumulate over riffles. In this video Ed McCoy shows us how to tie his grey drake spinner pattern. Tie some and get out there! Or you can purchase Ed's Pattern from Orvis here.

We still have some open dates between now and Early July, call Cherie at 231-228-7135 to book one!

Fishing the big bug hatches

The large mayflies, Hexes, Drakes and Isonychias produce the best dry fly fishing of the season in term of fish size. However because you are fishing in the dark often there are some unique differences in presentation, wading etc. Below you will find a link to an article addressing some of the issues and outlining how to deal with them.

In addition to the tips outlined in the article a couple of things should  be remembered. As we get farther into June the water will warm substantially thereby holding less oxygen and making it harder for a fish to recover from the fight when released. You can help the fish by using larger tippet allowing you to “horse” the fish in, reducing the amount time the fish is struggling. Also reducing or eliminating time out of water for the hero photos is a good thing. While we all like to remember our best catches it should be more important that the fish survives to be caught again. Try leaving the fish in the water and slipping your hand under the net so that you have a scale to see how large the catch is without taking the fish out of the water. Then when released the fish will have a greater chance of survival.

Also be patient. The rivers are the busiest in June. We all need to remember the Golden Rule and treat others like we want to be treated.

Here is the article with tips and techniques to help you be safe and successful!  Good luck.

Tying Knots in Low Light

Starting in Late May and running through June Michigan anglers are fishing up to and after dark. Through the years I've learned a couple of tricks to help change or replace flies quickly with little or no light.

Read this article and watch the video, it will help when it's dark!
The Reach Cast will increase your success in the dark. Learn it here!
The Quigley Cripple
Steve Pels created this pattern, The Quigley Cripple, as a representation for Brown Drakes and Slate Drakes. He has used it very successfully the last few years.

You can find the fly tying video here!

Thanks for the fly Steve and for the video Jon Ray!
Thanks again for your support. It would be greatly appreciated that those of you who have utilized our services take the time to review us on the Orvis website sometime this year. Go to this link and click on "write a review". Orvis uses these reviews to determine the Orvis Endorsed Guide Service of the Year award. We won it in 2010 and it's time to win again!
