Hi and welcome to Step Out for May 2019.  This lovely Autumn weather has been perfect for school groups undertaking stream studies.  It has been a busy month for our water testing gear.  We have helped Eskdale School, Hastings Boys' High School, Pukehamoamoa School (pictured below) and Karamu High School. Bookings are coming in now for term 4.

The winter Plant to Protect community planting days start this coming Saturday 1 June at Waitangi Regional Park.  There are several community planting opportunities to get involved in so check out our Facebook for the dates.

On Saturday 8 June we are promoting World Oceans Day in Ahuriri.  This afternoon will be fun and informative. More details listed below.

Enjoy the last of the long weekends coming up at the end of the week. Lets hope this beautiful weather continues for a bit longer yet...

Youth Environment Council

It was a good turnout for the Youth Environment Council's first public event on Friday 24 May.  Over 30 people came along for a mini beach clean up on Marine Parade.  In one hour, six big rubbish bags were full! A lot of micro plastics were evident, so we are really pleased to get these out of the environment. Thanks to everyone who came along.

Next, members are planning to take part in the World Oceans Day event on Saturday 8 June, running the Sandcastle Competition and the Beach Clean Up.

Enviroschools

During April Jenni Scothern-King spent time at Tutira School.  She was there on a good day as it included a 3-course lunch prepared and served by senior students.

Time was also spent with students working on a new vision map.

Ruakituri School are also looking to update their Enviroschools vision map. Jenni will be back there in May to help with their planning. Here they are pictured with their bumper parsnip crop!

Based in Wairoa Jenni covers a big territory in her Enviroschools work.  Calling on our Enviroschools Te Mahia, Nuhaka, Ruakituri, Wairoa, St Josephs', Tiaho, Te Kura o Mohaka, TKKM o Ngati Kahungunu o Wairoa and Tutira.

Who we like

Napier Boys' High School
Watch this space!  Thanks to Mike Ashby a dedicated teacher from Napier Boys' High School the new detention ponds at Te Awa Estate are being planted in natives.

Two sessions have taken place with several more to go.  Student volunteers are giving up a few hours of their weekend to undertake this work.

Mike is a keen advocate for the environment and is in his happy place working with the students and improving our environment at the same time.

Special thanks to Napier City Council Debra Stewart and Jason Tickner for supporting this action.

Where we like

Drain Detectives at Onekawa School

We have some keen Drain Detectives at Onekawa School.  It was great to spend a morning working with two classes and sharing information all about our storm water and waste water.

Thanks for inviting me Tim Race.

If you want to include a stormwater activity into your enquiry then please get in touch.

What we like

We are celebrating World Oceans Day with some fun activities next to the beach in Ahuriri.  Between 1 pm and 4 pm, look for the flags near East Pier.

HBRC and Our Seas Our Future (OSOF) will be joined by others with a passion for the environment and especially the ocean.

It will be educational, informative and include some fun for families with a sandcastle competition planned, a treasure hunt and a beach clean up.
