June Monthly Meeting  +
National Convention Delegate Elections

At our Monthly Meeting this Sunday at the South Florida AFL-CIO, we will elect four delegates to attend DSA's National Convention in Atlanta from August 2-4 Delegate nominations close on Wednesday; if you're a member and still haven't declared your candidacy, please reach out to the Steering Committee ASAP.  In the event of a contested election, we will be sending out electronic absentee ballots to our membership preceding the vote.  Other items on the agenda include a bylaw amendment to alter the composition of the Steering Committee, a presentation by our comrades at South Florida BDS and establishing a nominations committee for our Steering Committee elections next month.

On Wednesday, May 30 at 7pm we will be holding a workshop about the Convention to discuss the internal politics of DSA at the national level, along with the various slates and big-ticket items that will be voted on.  The Steering Committee has created this "cheat sheet" as a guide for members to work these important issues.

Lastly, we have started a GoFundMe to financially support our delegates' trip to Atlanta.  Between registration fees, lodging and transportation, the Convention isn't shaping out to be cheap.  As socialists we believe that this opportunity should be accessible to all our members, not just those with financial means.  We strongly urge everyone to please consider supporting this mission.

New Member Orientation

Are you new to DSA and/or wondering how you can get involved?  Join us before our Monthly Meeting for our quarterly New Member Orientation at 1pm.  We will be talking about DSA, the nature of our organizing here in Miami, our Working Groups and harassment policy. We encourage all new and prospective members to attend!

Covering the coup: Max Blumenthal speaks

Join the Hands of Venezuela Coalition South Florida, Miami DSA and community partners this Friday at the Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ for a talk featuring New York Times best-selling author Max Blumenthal, who reported on the ground from Venezuela in February and March. There he covered the continuing effort by the US Government to stage a coup.

Blumenthal is in South Florida on a three-day speaking tour. If you're unable to make the talk on Friday, he will also be speaking in Ft. Lauderdale at the Unitarian Church on Wednesday, May 29, and at FIU on Thursday, May 30.

There will be a wine and cheese reception ($10) at 6pm, followed by the talk and discussion from 7 to 9:30.

2020 Ballot Initiatives Canvassing

Join us for our weekly canvasses, where we collect petitions for possible 2020 state-wide ballot initiatives like Medicaid Expansion, $15/hour Minimum Wage and Cannabis Legalization.  Our next canvass will take place on Saturday, May 25 at 11:30am.  We will be grouping at the Panther Coffee location in Little Haiti before we knock doors.  Hope to see you there!

No Shortcuts

How can our movement start to build true political power?  Join us for our next political education reading series on June 25, where we will be discussing Jane McAlevey's No Shortcuts: Organizing for Power in the New Guilded Age, which attempts to answer this question through the lens of labor organizing. This event will compliment a series of mass calls DSA is holding with the author, where she will be giving remarks and taking questions from members. You can RSVP here for the first of these on June 1st.

Move to Amend Day of Action

On Wednesday, May 29, come support Move to Amend's "We the People" Amendment. If passed, this amendment would be a big step in the right direction for reforming US election law and getting corporate money out of politics. They will be gathering outside Rep. Donna Shalala's office to urge her to co-sponsor.  Visit Movetoamend.org to sign the petition.

Bern, baby, Bern

At our April Monthly Meeting we voted overwhelmingly to endorse Bernie Sanders' 2020 Presidential campaign. We are still in the early stages of forming our campaign, and  we hope to begin rolling it out in the coming months.  If you would like to get involved in this historic campaign, please shoot us a message.

Donate to Miami DSA!

For nearly the entirety of DSA's history in Miami, we've organized, served our community, offered trainings and educational events with virtually no money. You can help us expand and sustain our work by becoming a monthly sustainer or giving a one-time donation. Thank you so much for your support.
