Get Up Mum rolls onto ABC’s RN this week. It’s the sound of the story as well as the spirit. The hiss, the static, the atmosphere of love. Ten episodes air weekdays at 9:20am and are available for high speed dubbing from the Life Matters site. There’s also a hearty feature story on the ABC News page. Think of it as The Bedroom Philosopher’s prequel. The Happiest Boy meets Middle Aged Mum.
SERVING SUGGESTION: Episodes are ideally heard on an AM radio at the prescribed time. Failing this, you can obtain them from computer where they are best in a beanbag, in the dark, in moderation. (Recommended eardiddle twice weekly, or approx frequency of A Country Practice on Southern Cross - (Mon/Wed)). Excess consumption may cause heartsickness. Flush effected area with Enya.

I wrote a piece all about it for The Big Issue last year.
Some good movies about mental illness include but not limited to: Angel Baby, An Angel At My Table, Sweetie, Benny & Joon, Birdman, Donnie Darko, The Fisher King, The Sunnyboy (Australian documentary) & I Never Promised You a Rose Garden (also an excellent book).
My other favourite segment is Red Faces. The first act is an old lady from Adelaide in a silver tap costume who does a tap dancing routine. Kylie Minogue is one of the judges along with the bloke who plays the brother on Mother and Son. Red who is normally only mean to the acts is being mean to Kylie.
“Can I just interrupt there, I do like your new look I think it’s fantastic. The cheap tarty look…”
Everyone laughs and cheers.
“Now that’s not fair,” says Daryl. “Redmond I’m always castigating you now, for good reason.”
“Castrating?” says Kylie? “Castrating? I think perhaps castrating him.”
Nan laughs. You can hear women in the audience cheering.
“Good onya lass. You give as good as you get. You stick it to him!”
