Touchstone Center for Children

June Newsletter

Greetings,

So often, amidst the busyness of schools–we ignore the capacities of children to reach into the slower and quieter realms of their imaginative thought. Surrounded, as we all are, by the ever-increasing activity of instant information and imagery, it seems more and more urgent to find a time and place within schooling, where the very subtleties of experience and understanding, can be creatively and imaginatively explored and sustained.

With this in mind, I am very fortunate to have been collaborating over the past eight years with Karen Fitzgerald, an innovative and creative teaching-artist at PS 99(Q), on a variety of projects aimed at bringing children closer to the conversation that is their imaginative experience.

And this year, as part of the Touchstone Center’s 50th Anniversary, Karen has taken my poem and book, Each Sky Has Its Wordsand used it as a source for children and teachers throughout the school, to discover, through their own journey of listening, the subtle and evocative whisperings of language that exist both in ourselves and in the natural world.

The outcome of this journey is now a permanent Garden of Whispering–a virtual landscape of images and words painted and inscribed on walls outside classrooms, in entrances, lobbies, and windows–all attesting to the rich vibrancy of children’s imaginative expression and insights. A gentle and evocative documentary of the project by Danilo Randjic-Coleman can be found here.

My gratitude to Karen, for her ability to make possibility, an inspiring reality–along with the encouragement and wisdom of Paulette Foglio, the Principal of PS 99(Q), and her gifted and committed staff and teachers. And, always and always, the many children who continually explore and discover realms of meaning and imagining that delight and enrich–all of us.

May the summer ahead be a journey of listening–and
the secrets that are its whisperings.

Best,
Richard
