Sewing days

It seems so long since the last sewing day but that is because it has been but the good news is that the next one is just around the corner.

The date: 8 June!

It is of course being held at Trinity Lutheran College at 251 Cotlew Street, Ashmore and will be running from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm.

All at sea!

We had some great news recently with a request for Days for Girls kits from a very unexpected and different source.

What's different about this one is that it is part of a Rally with Yachts instead of cars!

Last month, I had contact from John Hembrow - the organiser of the Down Under Rally.

Around 30 yachts left Southport Yacht Club on May 16 to travel to New Caledonia & some are going on to Vanuatu. They have taken 360 kits with them to distribute to the villages in outlying islands. The idea is that they always take gifts to these villages when visiting and what a better gift than a Days for Girls kit.

You can find out more information by clicking here

Check out their Facebook page where we hope to see some photos of our kits.

Financial Position

There's been both good news and bad news on this front.

In the last newsletter, I outlined that we had funds of $4,064.82.

The great news is that we have been able to add to this with great support from:

  • The Australian Tax Office - $26.04 - They are great supporters of Days for Girls because we are able to claim back the GST on all expenses and even on goods donated if we get a tax receipt. Seriously though, Days for Girls Australia is GST registered and we are able to claim through them
  • The Craft Parlour - $140 – which is a donation of the fees they collect from their craft classes where we teach sewing of the kits
  • Lisa Stubbs and the nurses in the Intensive Care Unit at Gold Coast University Hospital - $250 - from donations and a cake stall that they ran for DFG.

A huge thank you for your donations.

The bad news is that materials and goods that have been purchased in the same period come to over $2,600 so we are now down to around $1,873.

There has been some heavy buying in the last few weeks to take advantage of specials on offer with daily visits to Spotlight to take advantage of the “Spend $100- and get $40- off” so we are well stocked up.

The big news is that we have been successful in gaining a grant from Rotary District 9640 that will be a big boost to our available funds.

Sad news

You may have already seen this on Facebook.

We had some sad news a few weeks ago with the passing of Doug Robbins.

Doug passed away after a short battle with cancer.

Doug and his wife Annette have been volunteering with us since the very early days of our team.

A quiet achiever who was always "heads down and bum up" and even this is obvious from the only photos that we have where he is hard at work!

We will miss your quiet steady ways and we pass on our love and support to Annette and his family.

RIP Doug

Zip Lock Bags

A great way to help us at little cost is to pop a pack of zip lock bags in your trolley when you are doing the groceries. These are the large size which measure 33 x 27cm.

We usually buy the Coles brand which is around $2-40 a pack but this of course adds up when we need 800 bags to pack 400 kits.

If you can help that would be amazing.

Success Checkpoint!

1780 kits have been distributed over the last 12 months to Vanuatu, Vietnam, Ethiopia, PNG, India, Samoa and Solomon Islands.

All up since 2015 we have delivered 4062 kits.

Included in these figures is 300 kits that went to Nepal with Stanthorpe Rotary as part of a trip that they did. You can read their report here
