Suella Braverman MP
A strong voice for Fareham

Welcome!

Welcome to my monthly newsletter, highlighting the issues that I have been working on in both Parliament and Fareham.

The month has been dominated by the announcement that Theresa May is stepping down as Leader of the Conservative Party, which means she will be replaced as Prime Minister at the end of July.

I pay tribute to Theresa May for her service to our country and her time at the helm trying to navigate Britain through its greatest challenge since the Second World War. It was an honour to serve her as a minister in the Department for Exiting the European Union, and although her strategy and policy direction for Brexit has not attracted my support, I commend Mrs May for her hard work, dedication and steely resolve in what is undoubtedly one of the hardest jobs in Britain. I wish her all the best for the future and thank her for her unwavering service to the Conservative Party.

The month of May also saw the staging of the European Elections, which I absolutely did not want us to be taking part in. My position was always that the UK should have left the EU on the 29th March with or without a deal, and that the decision to extend Article 50 went against the result of the referendum.

Understandably, voters decided to punish both the Conservatives and Labour by voting for ardently pro-Leave or pro-Remain parties, which sends a message that the Conservative Party must adopt a new leader which is resolute in delivering Brexit, grasping its opportunities and re-focusing on other domestic issues which matter to families and working people, and that is why I will be supporting Dominic Raab. He is a former Brexit Secretary who voted to leave the EU and who is firmly committed to leaving in October - deal or no deal. I also believe he will bring a fresh approach to domestic policy and working to tackle the UK's biggest issues.

I do, however, look forward to seeing who else puts themselves forward for Leader and how they think they are the best person to take the country forward.

I hope you enjoy my newsletter, and if you want to raise anything with my team and I, then you can contact us here.

I will also be holding my annual Health Summit on Friday, 7th June which will give local residents the opportunity to meet with various local health organisations and NHS representatives. The Summit will be held at Fareham Community Church, 171-173 West Street, Fareham, PO16 0EF between 6.30 - 8.00pm. Admission is free and tickets can be obtained here. I hope you can make it.

FCH Taskforce launches Future Vision report

I was delighted to meet with the Fareham Community Hospital Taskforce to launch our Future Vision report which lays out a number of recommendations of how services and accessbility can be improved for local residents.

The report follows a public consultation which sought views from patients and local health stakeholders on how they thought FCH could be better utilised, with the main recommendations being an expansion of the Same Day Access Service which sees GP services being provided at FCH, a bus stop outside FCH and better signposting for elderly support services.

I now look forward to working further with the Taskforce and various local NHS organisations to implement the report's recommendations.

New Renal treatment will improve quality of care for patients, says Suella

Following my requests, discussions and lobbying with Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, I was very pleased to learn that a new renal treatment facility will be coming to Fareham Community Hospital.

The new hub will be an essential step in delivering the care that patients in Fareham deserve, and I am grateful to all those who have supported our campaign for better facilities at the hospital. I would especially like to express my gratitude towards the Fareham Meon Rotary Club who are continuing their proud record of investing in the local community.

Everybody involved with delivering these new facilities for patients can be proud of their contribution, however, this does not signal an end to our work at Fareham Community Hospital and I will continue to work and lobby for further improvements.

Fareham residents turn out for Suella's Senior Citizens Fair

In late May I was delighted to host my third annual Senior Citizens’ Fair which proved very useful for hundreds of local residents. I think it is very important that as people start to retire and become senior members of our community, they have the necessary tools and information to plan their lives and maintain healthy and happy lives.

I would like to thank all those organisations that had stalls at the Fair and all the Fareham residents who attended, as well as Lucketts Travel who sponsored the event. I very much look forward to holding another Senior Citizens’ Fair next year.

Suella visits new Police Investigation Centre in Portsmouth

I was very pleased to visit the new Police Investigation Centre in Portsmouth alongside Portsmouth MP Penny Mordaunt and Police and Crime Commissioner Michael Lane.

We were given a tour of the impressive facility by Inspector Maggs who showed us the new interview rooms and custody units which are replacing the existing facility in Fareham.

The new centre is testament to the investment being made in our Hampshire police force and their commitment to front-line policing.

Suella congratulates local nursery on expansion

It was great to visit Hopscotch Nursery alongside Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage to congratulate them for successfully opening their new site in Fareham and expanding their operations.

The new facilities, such as the indoor play areas and on-site office spaces, are fantastic and this is another example of a local business going from strength to strength.

It also illustrates that if we have a strong business environment where businesses are given the necessary support and suitable conditions to grow, we can expect to see more success stories such as Hopscotch. All of this leads to a more prosperous economy and more jobs for local people in Fareham.

Suella raises concerns about housing provision for armed forces with defence ministers

I have raised concerns with defence ministers about issues faced by members of the armed forces relating to their service housing in Fareham.

Fareham is home to hundreds of servicemen and women - mainly Army and Navy - who are accommodated in Service Family Housing provided by the Ministry of Defence in conjunction with private company CarillionAmey. Whilst the majority of residents are well housed, I have met with several service personnel who have faced ongoing problems with CarillionAmey due to the sub-standard housing and poor quality support which in some instances is affecting health and wellbeing.

I have therefore requested to meet with defence minister Tobias Ellwood to expedite these complaints and to look at the handling procedure by both CarillionAmey and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation.

Providing for our armed forces encompasses far more than just making sure they have the necessary support and equipment in combat. If we want to maintain our proud tradition of having the world’s best armed forces, we have to ensure that they are housed appropriately and with dignity. This is why I have spoken to the minister so we can address these issues surrounding poor quality housing maintenance.

Suella welcomes HMS Collingwood staff to Westminster

It was great to welcome members of HMS Collingwood’s Naval training team to Parliament and hear how their work is supporting the Navy’s security operations.

As a committed supporter of Britain’s armed forces, I am very grateful for their work and am inspired by the quality of service provided by our Naval servicemen and women in keeping us safe and upholding Britain’s interests.

I am always happy to host visitors from my constituency in Parliament to highlight how we work to get the best deal for Fareham. If you would like to visit Parliament as a group, please do get in touch with my office via my website.
