This Thursday, 23rd May, how and if you vote could change the fate of our country. In a week’s time we face the most important European elections in our history. Not only will they determine who represents us in the European Parliament, they will shape the debate here in the UK too about our future relationship with the European Union. I am writing to ask you to use your vote - and to vote Labour.
As your MP, I am determined to ensure all of you get the final say on Brexit in a public vote. Three years on from the referendum it is right that everyone in the UK - not just 650 MPs – decides whether the terms and conditions for leaving Europe are right for our country or whether to remain in the EU instead.
Wales faces a clear threat at this election from Nigel Farage and his Brexit Party. They want to force Britain to crash out of the EU without any deal. If the vote against their divisive and toxic politics is fragmented amongst many parties then in a week’s time Mr Farage could claim to speak for our communities and our country.
Above all, these elections are about our values and the people who are willing to fight for them. They do not have a vote on Brexit like I do as your MP, but they are working hard to put protecting workers’ rights, tackling climate change and standing up for equality at the heart of Europe.
Only a vote for Labour will help to elect a progressive as President of the European Commission. Only Labour’s allies in Europe are committed to keeping us in the European Union.
Please don’t let Mr Farage lay claim to our country. Make your voice heard this Thursday and vote to put progressive values at the heart of our future in Europe.
