June Sermon Series

I was one of five children growing up in a small town south of Buffalo NY.  Growing up in a large family meant that you would often receive "hand me downs" (clothes, shoes, coats, etc.)  For me, being the only girl of the five children,  hand me downs were exciting.  The hand me downs I would receive were from an older neighbors daughter - who had really exciting things to share when she had out grown her clothes.  When our neighbor would bring a couple of bags over of hand me downs - it was almost like Christmas.  I was so excited to see what my older friend had outgrown that I could now have.

Hand me downs for my four brothers were not as exciting...especially for the youngest one.  Hand me downs for them were the same worn clothes they saw walking around on an older brother.  They knew what was coming, these hand me downs were not very exciting - sometimes dreaded.

In June we are going to take a look at all types of hand me downs that we might receive throughout our lives.  Things we are given, lessons that we are taught, and perhaps traditions we've grown up with and what God teaches us about when to value these gifts, and when it is time to embrace something new.

I invite you to worship with us, as we explore together what the words "hand me downs" mean to you.  What have you been given throughout the years?  What might God be calling you now to give?  And when is it time to start something new.

The "Hand Me Downs" sermon series dates:

June 2 - Esther 9: 26-28
June 9 - Ezra 3: 10-11
June 16 - Psalm 106: 1-12
June 23 - 2 Timothy 1: 3-4

Pentecost Sunday is June 9.  Pentecost is one of the principal days of the Christian year, celebrated on the fiftieth day after Easter. The Greek word "pentecoste" means "fiftieth day."  Pentecost is the day on which the Christian church commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and others assembled in Jerusalem. (Read Acts 2)  It marks the beginning of the Christian church and the proclamation of its message throughout the world and is often referred to as the birthday of the church.  The liturgical color for Pentecost is red.

Traditionally, Pentecost has been a day for baptisms and since it was the custom in the early church for persons being baptized to wear white robes or clothing, the day also became known as Whitsunday, a contraction of white Sunday.  Today, most people wear something red to church on Pentecost Sunday.
DeBows will host a Flea Market on Saturday, June 15 from 8am - 2pm.  There will be a food concession with breakfast and lunch items, as well as a car wash from 9:30am - 1:30pm.  Table space for vendors is $10 and setup begins at 7am.  You may contact Sue Hayward at 732-928-0352 or jerseysue@outlook.com to reserve table space (tables not provided).  Also, contact Sue if you are able to help with the setup (7am) and/or the breakdown of the flea market at (2pm).  Any helping hands would be greatly appreciated. There is no rain date for the event, but another flea market is being planned for late September.  Come browse for bargins, grab a bite to eat, and get your car washed!

DeBows  is blessed with musicians, composers, and singers who care about, and pray for each other, and share their musical talent freely and joyfully.  We welcome newcomers to join our music ministry, either vocal or instrumental.  Anyone interested in participating in the DeBows music ministry can contact the Music Director, Grayce Armstrong, at music@debowsumc.org.  The choir rehearses at 10:45 each Sunday morning.  The band practices on Friday nights at 6:00 PM.

The study group is currently discussing 2 Peter.   Everyone is welcome and can join the study at any time.  More details about the bible study can be found on the church website.

Grocery Shopping Cards

Every week during Fellowship Time, you have the opportunity to purchase grocery store shopping cards for either Shoprite or Stop & Shop.  This is a convenient way to pay for the food you buy at the grocery store and at the same time support the ministries of DeBows UMC.  The church makes 5% of all shopping cards sold. You may see Sue Hayward or Karen Stillwell to purchase the shopping cards on any Sunday.

The DeBows Food Pantry is open on the 2nd & 4th Monday each month from 6:00-8:00pm.  If you would like to volunteer time to support this ministry, please see the sign-up sheet outside of Fellowship Hall.  You may contact Deb Cregle for more information.
Fellowship Time
Fellowship Time is our weekly time of informal gathering to greet each other and visitors, and to share some light refreshments. It is conducted after the 9:30am Sunday worship service.  It is volunteer driven and if you would like to host Fellowship Time on any given week, please see the sign-up sheet, with guidelines, outside of Fellowship Hall. It is easy and a great way to engage in the life of our church.
