DBS NEWSLETTER

24th May 2019

From Mark McVeigh, Principal

Dear DBS Parents,

There was a wonderful Y5 Orca Class Assembly today, organised by Ms Lovatt, which focused on charitable acts. It was wonderful to witness the DBS community celebrating acts of kindness, and the core message was that everyone can make a difference.

We have learnt about individual student successes this week, including that of Kinjay and Dragon in swimming at the Silpakorn Championship; and Palm and Pun Pun in the Vanda International Science Competition.

It was good to see many of you at various seminars this week: the EY1 and EY2 Transition meetings, the Y6-8 Student Development Parent Workshop and the Summer School Parent Information Session.

Finally, please remember that the Principal’s Development Seminar will be next Tuesday 28th May, from 8.30am to 9.30am. Topics will include Streamlining the Vision; Prize Day; the new Yearbook; and matters for the 2019-20 year like the Form Tutor’s role, ECAs, ESL, and short biographies of the new teachers. I very much hope that you can join us.

Lisa joins me in sending you our very best wishes,

Mark McVeigh
Principal
Denla British School, Bangkok

Congratulations go to Tonkao in Y8, for creating the winning design of the 'Denla Cares' logo.

In Art, Y1 students are creating African savannah silhouette pictures. They mixed powder paint to create different shades of orange for the background. Then, they researched different African animal silhouettes on the iPads and then cut them out from black paper.

This week, Y2 have been learning about time. The children have had lots of fun telling time using the giant clock and mini clocks. They have also been reinforcing their learning at home using their watches.

On Friday 21st June, we will be celebrating Denla Cares. This is an event involving the whole school community; students, parents and staff. At DBS, we believe it is important to focus on positive values, such as kindness, gratitude and happiness. All students will be involved in a class based project to 'give something back' to others. The day will focus on kindness and to wrap up the day, a Great British tea party will be held and parents will be invited. More information will be available after the half term break.

This week, Mrs Skinner and Mrs Holman ran the EY meetings to find out about what happens in the next academic year. They shared the things that remain the same but also the things that will change for next year; both routine and expectations, but also academically. Please watch the videos below. If you missed this important meeting, please log on to the parent portal where you will find the slides in English and in Thai.
Thank you.

Thank you to all the parents who joined the Summer School Information Event this morning. We hope you enjoyed finding out more about this exciting DBS English programme, focused on the learning style of our students. If you would like your child to attend Summer School, there is still time to apply before the Summer break. Please visit the Admissions Team, or contact 02 6661933.

Students in Y6-Y8 are participating in a student development week, focusing on puberty. Parents were invited to attend a seminar about "how to discuss puberty with your child". The children are attending a series of workshops and talks about the different aspects of growing up.

This week we practised the finale of the school show Bugsy Malone, including the final custard pie fight and musical number "You Give A Little Love." This scene seemed to be very popular with the cast and it was great to see the students getting into character. Tickets will be available from 24th June and there will be three shows on Wednesday 3rd, Thursday 4th and Friday 5th July 2019.

ATTENTION - BUGSY CAST MEMBERS AND PARENTS!!
You have recently been sent an email with information regarding tickets, shows and the weekend rehearsals on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June. These rehearsals will be from 9.00am-4.00pm on both days. If you have not received an email, please let us know immediately, so we can resend the information to you. Thank you.

Congratulations go to Palm, in Y6, who won the silver medal, and PunPun, in Y4, who won the bronze medal, in their respective age groups, at the Vanda International Science Competition 2019. A fantastic achievement, well done!
