SOMEONE'S SPEAKER REQUESTS HAVE SKYROCKETED
Billionaire Robert F. Smith made headlines over the weekend when he announced during his commencement address at Morehouse College that he was paying off the student debt of the school’s entire class of 2019—to the tune of up to $40 million.

Unsurprisingly, the incredible gesture went viral within minutes, and it’s refueling a powerful conversation about how we got here to begin with and just how bad the student loan crisis really is. More than 44 million Americans collectively owe over $1.5 trillion in student debt, which has been steadily rising every year and disproportionately impacts black graduates and women, who hold about two-thirds of that debt. Presidential hopefuls are all throwing their hat in the ring on addressing this issue, which is likely to be top of mind for young voters in 2020.

For brands and organizations looking to attract recent grads, this should be top of mind, too. A study from American Student Assistance found 86% of young employees say they’d stick with an organization for five years if the employer helped pay back their loans. Yet only 4% of employers currently do. This perk is not only a likely win to attract and retain top young talent, but also help meaningfully diversify recruitment considering who bears the brunt here. Beats trying to compete with the free snacks and ping-pong tables, in our book.
