     School Value for Term 2
     Pono/Integrity
Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I had the pleasure of watching our Senior Boys play in the NW Football tournament yesterday and I am very pleased to report that we won the tournament in a very dramatic penalty shoot out against our local friends Huapai. What really impressed me was the competitive and sportsmanlike manner in which our boys conducted themselves. They made us all very proud and they are a credit to our school. Thank you to David Lloyd for being their coach.

Last Friday night was our annual PTA run Disco. It was a huge success with over 650 students attending on the evening. My sincere thank you to the PTA committee for all their support and help on the evening. Your efforts made it a very special and fun night for our students.

Thank you for the 5 parent and 1 staff nomination for the Board of Trustees that we have received so far. If you are still considering standing for the BOT, nominations close this Friday at 12noon. At our last BOT meeting we had the Ministry of Education attend and I am pleased to report that the building of our four new permanent classrooms is back on the table. If all goes well we could see our new block being constructed sometime next year.   The Board also agreed to close the school for the upcoming strike on Wednesday 29 May.

Helping Children Speak Up

What do you say to a child who tells you: “If I do what they say, they let me play with them. If I don’t, they walk away and tell me not to follow.” To stand up to a peer group was to risk losing them but to follow the herd was to risk getting in trouble or allowing another child to be hurt.

Many children struggle to assert their thoughts and feelings but assertiveness can be taught. Knowing how to stand up for yourself and others is especially important when it comes to bullying, teasing, peer pressure and other negative behaviours.

Building assertiveness skills takes time and practice.

Try these strategies

Talk about it.
All too often we tell children what to do without actually giving them details on what we mean. Discuss different communication styles.

·  Passive: Passive communicators struggle to make eye contact, use a very quiet voice and act as if other peoples’ rights are more important than their own.

·  Aggressive: Aggressive communicators are loud, imposing and act as if their rights are more important than the rights of others.

·  Assertive: Assertive communicators make eye contact, use a calm but firm voice and respect their own rights and the rights of others equally.

Model it.
Be the model you want your child to copy. Stand up for your views, even if they may not be popular. This can be a tough one, especially when views clash. Model assertive communication skills. Teach your children to follow these steps when asserting their views:

·  Remain calm.

·  Make eye contact.

·  Use a clear, confident voice.

·  Listen.

There are times when we have to agree to disagree, but that doesn’t mean that we silence our voices. Practising statements like, “I appreciate that you explained your point of view. I have a different opinion, but now I know where you’re coming from,” teaches them that it’s okay to disagree.

Use the mirror.
Practise making eye contact in the mirror. Stand tall. Hold your shoulders back.

By altering their body postures and facial expressions as they practise assertive statements, they can see what works and what doesn’t.

Try realistic scenarios. Have your child come up with the problems and take turns acting as the bully and victim or aggressive and passive communicators. Practising the problem from both sides can be eye opening.

The more children practise speaking up at home, the greater confidence and assertiveness they will have out in the world!

To date there have been 5 parent and 1 staff nomination received for the up-coming board of trustee elections. This is the required number to fill the board.  However, if anyone is considering putting forward a nomination, this must be received by noon on Friday 24 May, accompanied by a candidate statement, both as originals. If additional nominations are received, there will be a vote.  Please review the notice board in the office for candidate statements of the nominations received to date.

Absences
Please contact the school if your child is going to be absent for any reason, you can email, phone or use the link on the website.  Office staff have to contact the parents of every child who is away without a reason - so many people are forgetting to ring in that this takes a long time.   If a child has not made it safely to school the faster we can locate them the better.

PTA UPDATE
A huge thank you to all the families who attended the Disco Party 2019 on Friday night. We have received a great deal of positive feedback from families and students.  The general consensus is that it was a spectacular event with gorgeous decorations inside, a lovely outdoor chill-out zone complete with fairy lights in the trees and pontoon lights, fantastic music by the DJ and as always plenty of snacks, drinks and glowsticks for all.  It was great to see students really making an effort with what they wore and there were some very funny photos taken in the photo booth (one PTA member’s son wore the Poop Emoji on his head).   This year we sold 621 tickets which is amazing so between that, and the goodies purchased on the night, it’s looking like a cracker of a result.  Well done Team Waimauku!

The PTA is as always extremely grateful to all the Mums and Dads who assisted with setting up and packing down as well as all the other myriad of jobs required in between.  This really helped us ensure all students had fun and stayed safe and helped share the workload enormously.

We also acknowledge the huge support we received from Gary Pasfield, Anita Newland and the awesome ladies in the office who helped us so much.  Gary and Anita were there until the end so it was a late finish for them after a long day so we really appreciate that.  The PTA is made up predominantly of new members now so we just want to acknowledge how great school has been in terms of supporting us and teaching us the ropes. Having said that, between the Fun Run and the Disco I think we have hit the road running!

As always the PTA has one eye on future events and plans are already well underway for Ag Day.

The next PTA meeting will be held in the staffroom at 9am on Monday 10 June so please feel free to join us and just have a listen, or share your ideas for fundraising events or put your hand up to help with a wee job or two!

 Thanks again,

Waimauku School PTA
