Highlights of the May 20 Board of Education Meeting
Dr. Abrego, Director of Bilingual Education and Language Acquisition, provided a review of qualitative and quantitative assessment data regarding the Middle School Dual Language program. The data focused on parent and student perception of bilingualism, parent and student satisfaction with the program and student academic performance in the areas of English language arts, Spanish literacy and social studies. In addition, students participated in a Spanish language proficiency assessment. The results indicate that the vast majority of students participating in the middle school dual language program are exceeding, meeting or approaching designated learning standards in English language arts, Spanish literacy and social studies. Middle School South’s Pep Rally on Friday featured several wonderful performances, contests and a guessing game involving the three retiring staff, Ms. Burton, Mr. Kleinschmidt and Mr. Gomez. Elementary South Thanks Its Volunteers
Approximately 40 parents attended Elementary South’s Volunteer Tea on Friday morning, an event geared to thank all the parents who volunteered at Elementary South. Volunteers play a vital role in helping assure that activities such as class parties, Cape-abilities Week, book fair, climbing unit, lunch room, art adventure, or classroom centers go smoothly. Several groups of students made signs and read statements to show their appreciation for the volunteers.

Fifth Graders Prepare for Big Move to Middle School
Fifth-grade students from several elementary schools took a tour of Middle School South so they could begin to familiarize themselves with the building they will attend in the fall. A select group of Middle School South students provided them with tips about daily life at the middle school and took them on a tour. They visited the gym, art room, the STEM room, the consumer technology room and other areas. They also learned about the wide range of clubs, from chess to the Battle of the Books club, and sports teams they could join. In this way, they are better prepared when this school becomes their home in the fall.

Students vs. Teachers in Scholastic Bowl Competition
Teachers and students had loads of fun competing against each other at last week's Scholastic Bowl competition. In the beginning the teachers had an edge. But that edge quickly disappeared as students quickly answered a series of questions that stumped the teachers. The final score was: Students: 145; Teachers: 110.

La Kermés Brings a Taste of Latin America to Hawthorn
Families enjoyed strolling around the wide assortment of booths and tables that comprised La Kermés, the School of Dual Language’s annual Latin American Carnival, last Friday. Volunteers provided samples of delicious snacks, main dishes and desserts from many Latin American countries, including Columbia, Mexico and Puerto Rico, including empanadas, bunuelos, and chicharrones. Children played all sorts of games from bowling to basketball. Families had a chance to win a variety of children’s games through a raffle. Children enjoyed the face-painting and temporary tattoos. Overall, the event provided a wonderful taste of the world and culture south of the border.
