LEGISLATOR FOR A DAY

Every year our Warren County state representative Scott Lipps sponsors a contest, “Become a Legislator for a Day”, for fourth graders in which students could win a day touring our Ohio Statehouse and finding out what it is like in our state government.  Students in Ms. Holland’s Ohio History class are challenged to write an essay about a famous Ohioan from Warren County.  Students chose well known and not so well known people from our area such as Neil Armstrong, Luke Kennard, Anthony Munoz, Thomas Corwin and others.  They then researched and found out how each person influenced our county, our state, and our nation.  Our winners at Waynesville Elementary are Maia Stewart, Jayden Walters, and Paige Hines.  We are very proud of all our students who submitted amazing essays and these three students who will represent our school in Columbus.  Way to go!

So proud of you!

Michelle Holland

Congratulations to 8th grader, Brooke Schoephoerster, who placed 8th in the state in the Discus with a distance of 95 feet 2 inches and 6th in the Shot Put with a distance of 39 feet 2.75 inches!!!

Competition took place at Lancaster High School on Saturday, May 11.

POWER LUNCH MEETING
Mr. Dubbs, Superintendent, was asked by several elementary teachers to eat lunch with them and some elementary students who exemplified outstanding student habits.  Mr. Dubbs accepted and decided a "Business Power Lunch" with an agenda would be a good example to the students of how a business meeting is conducted.  Of course, it was a fun way to ask questions and hear responses from the students.  The agenda had questions such as “What did you enjoy most about this school year, what is your favorite subject, what do you like to do in your spare time?”  The luncheons were a success and the pizza, chips, cookies and drinks were a highlight!   Mr. Dubbs plans on continuing the “power lunch” in the upcoming years with more teachers and students.

THANK YOU WENZLER LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT AND STUDENT VOLUNTEERS!

Wenzler Landscape Management of Waynesville, Ohio helped Wayne Local Schools with their landscaping this past weekend. The landscape company graciously donated their time, energy, and mulch to the school.  In addition, there were plenty of student volunteers who helped the project along.  The students were represented by many various school groups and clubs, and were obtaining community service hours, however, some were there just to help out!

Waynesville Schools is grateful for the donation and efforts by all who participated and helped coordinate the project!

GARAGE DOORS COMPLETE THE ENTRYWAYS ON THE NEW BUS BARN

The exterior garage doors for the bus barn were installed this week.  Additionally, the interior work continues as office, restroom, and storage spaces are laid out and framed.  We are expecting phase 1 of the construction project to be completed near the beginning of August.

Third Grade Students are Published Authors & Illustrators

Waynesville Elementary third grade students are now PUBLISHED authors and illustrators. In April, the students had the opportunity to write and illustrate a Biopoem about their life.  We taught the students all about the writing and publishing process including the importance of multiple edits. We submitted their work to a publishing company called Studentreasures. They published their work into a book of outstanding and well thought out poems. Students were invited to purchase their book as a keepsake and many of them did!  If you are interested in purchasing your student’s published work please email your child’s reading teacher. We are so very proud of the effort the students put into this project.  The books turned out great and the students were very excited to see their work in a published book.

Congratulations to the winner of Storyworks Jr.'s Locust Contest from the February 2019 issue -  Elementary Student Maggie Martini!!

Maggie wrote a descriptive account, accurately detailing how the Rocky Mountain locusts attacked Laura's farm.  Her writing included a very strong introduction beginning with "It started one day when there was a weird looking cloud in the sky..."  Scholastic editor, Kara Corridan loved the suspenseful tone right from the start!

Congratulations again Maggie!!! Great job!!

Warren County Crisis Text Line:
Crises aren't "9 to 5" happenings. They sometimes come on when it's not easy to pickup a phone and call someone.  But you can text for help at any time.  Chat with a trained person by texting "4hope" to 741741.  That person will help you de-escalate and can offer information about local resources where you can find in-person help if needed.

The Crisis Text Line is always there for you, 24/7.  Just send a message (text 4hope to 741741.

Wayne Local Schools is expanding its services with The Education Connection (TEC) to include a Safety/Bully Tip Line.  When you witness verbal, written, physical, or electronic abuse, speak up!  If students hear or see suspicious behavior from another student, they should not ignore it.  We encourage all students to report any concerns about another student or the safety and security of Wayne Local School District.
Anyone can report anonymously a bullying/safety issue by calling the TEC tip line at (513) 855-4350 option 7 or by going online at waynelocal.tipline.info.   The tip line will also allow you to choose an incident number so that you can receive an update on the status or provide new information for this incident and still remain ANONYMOUS.

The information will be immediately forwarded to the proper authority.  All reports are taken very seriously.
There are posters displayed in all buildings with tip line information to remind students to always adopt the mindset of “if you see something or know something, say something.”

WELLNESS NEWS

Sun Safety
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the US.

UV radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer.

UV damage can also cause wrinkles and blotches or spots on your skin. The good news is that skin cancer can be prevented, and it can almost always be cured when it’s found and treated early.

Take simple steps to protect your skin:
  • Stay out of the sun as much as possible between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Put on sunscreen every 2 hours and after you swim or sweat.
  • Cover up with long sleeves and a hat.
  • Check your skin regularly for changes.
