Hello Azulita Friends and Supporters

We are excited to share our June newsletter with you. Thanks for subscribing! It's going to be an awesome summer for Azulita's Flagstaff team and we want you to be part of it!

Member Spotlight

There have been many changes to the Azulita Project in the past year, including several exciting changes to our core Flagstaff team. This summer, we look forward to showcasing key Azulita team members.
My name is Christopher Moreno. I am an intern for the Azulita Project and this summer I will be coordinating volunteering events, volunteers, and the Straw Free Flagstaff Campaign. I recently graduated Northern Arizona University with my bachelors in Public Health. I believe that plastic pollution and recycling are huge concerns to public health today and should to be addressed as soon as possible. I enjoy talking to individuals about the issue. Feel free to contact me with questions at outreach@azulitaproject.org or
623-986-2962.

Thank you Lauren!

Lauren Figueroa recently completed her 8 month internship with the Azulita Project. As our first intern, Lauren helped to refine and strengthen Azulita's internship program while also providing a leadership role with the Straw Free Flag campaign, outreach events and tabling. We so appreciate her passion and dedication to Azulita's mission of defending our communities and oceans from plastic pollution. We wish her all the best on her next adventure!

Flagstaff Community Farmers Market

We continue to table most Sundays at the Flagstaff Community Farmers Market in downtown Flag. A big thank you to our volunteers who make this possible, especially our Azulita board members and the Flagstaff Master Recyclers. Thanks, too, to Market co-owners Art and Heather Babbott for supporting our mission and providing space for the Azulita table.

We appreciate the opportunity to work with the great folks at the Market on their quest to make the Market single-use plastic free.

Stop by our booth to say hello and ask questions. We'll see you there!

#StrawFreeFlag

Straw Free Flagstaff is our ongoing campaign to reduce Flagstaff's single-use plastic's consumption. We see straws as an entry point in reducing the multitude of single-use plastic's. Azulita works with businesses and communities to reduce their plastic use and offers guidance to be more sustainable. We recently updated our #StrawFreeFlag website to highlight a list of local businesses actively participating in the campaign. Go check them out!

Flagstaff Sustainability Program

Azulita is excited to partner with the Flagstaff Sustainability Program. The Azulita Project and the Sustainability Program share similar goals with reducing Flagstaff's single use plastics. Azulita looks forward to continuing to work with the Master Recyclers on extending our outreach program and #StrawFreeFlag campaign.

Best Practices

Want to reduce plastic waste? Here are some easy ways to get started:
  • Bring your own reusable items: Grocery bags, coffee mug, produce bags, etc.
  • Avoid purchasing items that are packaged in non-recyclable plastics: Buy items in cardboard instead of plastic or Styrofoam, use less produce bags or not at all.
  • Make homemade meals: Making meals at home can help reduce unneeded packaging from fast food, plus its healthier for you
  • Talk about plastic! Start the conversation with family or friends about how they can reduce using plastics.

In the News!

In order to keep everyone informed on the plastic issue, check out these news articles:

The UN has established a plastic waste pact, that has been approved by 186 countries and the U.S. has not agreed to join.

Is plastic a human health crisis? Researchers believe that plastic pollution is a global health crisis.

World Oceans Day- June 8th

Join The Azulita Project for World Oceans Day at Made in the Shade Beer Festival on Saturday June 8th where we will talk about reducing single-use plastic consumption.

We will also be assisting Praxis Plastic in diverting waste from the landfill. Help us prevent the flow of plastic into our oceans and support innovative solutions like Praxis that are making a difference locally #togetherwecan
