That's a Wrap! Faith Studies 2019

Thank you Lethbridge Mennonite and Pastor Ryan Dueck for hosting the 2019 Faith Studies on May 13-15!

Ken Quiring,
pastor of Grace Mennonite Church in Brandon, presents on the theme “Biblical Storytelling: the transformative power of sacred story” as Leng Thang and Werner DeJong look on.

This Sunday, for the first time EVER, I presented the scripture text for my sermon from memory. I admit I felt quite vulnerable, a bit like a 6-year-old at a school recital. It was terrifying and exhilarating at the same time.  To walk away from the security of the printed page and the solid grounding of the pulpit was a challenge. I am convinced that without Ken Quiring’s practical instruction, advice, and actual demonstrations related to the act of Biblical Storytelling I would never have attempted something so outside of my comfort zone. At both Bergthal Mennonite Church and during the Faith Studies sessions at the Lethbridge Mennonite Church, Ken emphasized the need to tell the stories of the Bible from memory because it’s how they were originally intended to be shared and passed on. When we tell the stories in this way, the texts come to life, the congregation participates in the story, and biblical interpretation becomes a community effort.  As God’s word is absorbed into our being, it transforms, heals, and sustains. We begin to incarnate God’s word in us. Ken’s passion for this way of presenting the biblical text was infectious. As a result of these sessions, I have accepted his challenge to consider the act of Biblical Storytelling as a spiritual discipline. My prayer is that it will not only inform but transform my vocation as a pastor. I’m looking forward to the journey.
--Anna-Lisa Salo

I was reminded of the importance of storytelling in the life of faith—both in forming it,
and in living into it. The way Ken told the story of creation from Genesis 1 was a highlight that stood out. The event also reminded me of the importance of simply creating spaces where we, as pastors and lay leaders, can come together to build relationships and share with one another.
~Ryan Dueck

Dr. Elaine Heath, says the greatest challenge for the western church today is to “regain a gospel-centric imagination.”

At Gathering 2019, Heath will consider how the emergence of new expressions of church “can open our collective imagination.”

Pray for the Chinese Church. Young Christian leaders in China are spending time exploring the meaning of Anabaptist faith and practice. Pray that this new and exciting approach to discipleship will impact their congregations and strengthen their faith. Pray also for Chinese church leaders as they face growing political pressure and increasing restrictions.  Pray that they will continue to be salt and light in their communities.

Wisdom Commentary Series

This commentary provides feminist interpretation of Scripture in serious, scholarly engagement with the whole text, not only those texts that explicitly mention women. This commentary aims to be faithful to the ancient text, to explicate the world behind the text, where appropriate, and not impose commentary questions onto the ancient texts. The commentary addresses not only issues of gender, but also those of power, authority, ethnicity, racism, and classism, which all intersect. Order at www.commonword.ca/go/1790
