The ESP June Update is here and our Africa regional conference is in full swing! Read on for the latest developments from our working groups, national networks and the whole ecosystem services community.

ESP Africa conference

17-20 June 2019, Kpalimé, Togo 

Management of Ecosystem Services for Nature Conservation and Human Wellbeing in Africa



This week we are hosting the ESP Africa conference together with Plateforme des Organisations de la Société Civile pour la Sauvegarde des Montagnes (PSM) and Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment. 

The conference kicked off on Monday with a speech from His Excellency the Minister of Environment of Togo and a keynote by Martieuw Chimere Diaw on "The Africa IPBES Assessment and Africa Model Forest Network".

ESP 10th World Conference

10 years advancing ecosystem services science, policy and practice for a sustainable future



Registration is open for ESP10! Register here before 5 August to take advantage of the Early Bird fees. As always, ESP members receive a discount on the registration fee.

To stimulate and support the participation of young, early career researchers in ESP conferences we offer 5 ECR Travel Grants. You can find the conditions and eligibility criteria on this page. Submit your application before 12 July

You still have a chance to make a late abstract submission for ESP10. Submit your abstract before 26 June 2019. On the website you can find the full descriptions of all accepted conference sessions to which you can submit an abstract.

To stimulate the application of the ecosystem services concept in business activity, the ESP is organising a business-focused day on Thursday that will run in parallel to the rest of the ESP10 program.

News from our Working Groups


TWG 11 – Global ES Flows

  • A recent paper resulted from joint efforts of TWG 11 with the sDiv project sTeleBES. The paper was published in the Journal of Ecological indicators entitled “Guidance for assessing interregional ecosystem service flows”. Read more.
  • Another paper with authors from the TWG 11 was also recently published: A novel telecoupling framework to assess social relations across spatial scales for ecosystem services research. Read more.
  • Also, the WG welcomes abstracts for the next ESP10 in the session: T11 – Tele-coupling through flows of ecosystem services from regional to global scales

News from our Regional Chapters and National Networks


Brazil

  • Members of the network published a paper showing that postponing conservation actions will impair ecosystem services and increase conflict between conservation and human activities in the Brazilian Cerrado. Read more.
  • To expand knowledge about environmental services and to train professionals, the first seminar “Environmental Services: Management of Watershed” was held on May 23 at Embrapa Milho and Sorgo, in Sete Lagoas, MG. Read more.
  • The TEEB Regional-Local project, which deals with the Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity, ended last May after seven years of fruitful partnership between MMA, CNI and GIZ, within Brazil-Germany Cooperation. A number of important results were achieved in this period, promoting the natural capital and ecosystem services in public policy and businesses. Read more.

Greece (HESP)

A new research paper has been recently published in One Ecosystem Journal: Indicators for mapping and assessment of ecosystem condition and of the ecosystem service habitat maintenance in support of the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020. Read more.
 

Malta

  • Successful training course on ecosystem services and green infrastructure in Malta. Dr Mario Balzán, a member of the ESP Mediterranean working group, recently led a training course on ecosystem services and green infrastructure in Malta. The training course is framed within the EU-funded ReNature project, that aims to establish and implement a nature-based solutions research strategy for Malta. Read more.
  • ReNature Interdisciplinary Summer School – Nature Based Solutions in Landscape Management. This summer school is organised by the ReNature Horizon 2020 project and is supported by the Circular City COST Action. Application deadline - 10 July 2019. Read more.

United States (NESP)

There are two upcoming webinars of interest from the National Ecosystem Services Partnership (NESP).
  • Collaborative Science for Estuaries Webinar: “Exploring Applications of Ecosystem Services Conceptual Models for Coastal Habitats” by Lydia Olander and Sara Mason on 26 June.
  • NESP will be hosting the webinar: “Interpreting the IPBES Global Assessment” by Steve Polasky and Alex Pfaff two of the IPBES Assessment authors on 1 August.

This conference will take place between 2-6 September 2019, in Ōtautahi (Christchurch), Aotearoa, New Zealand under the theme Creating healthy communities and ecosystems for a resilient future. SER 2019 - Registration is open

Join the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) this 24-28 September for the 8th World Conference on Ecological Restoration in Cape Town, South Africa. The theme of SER2019 is Restoring Land, Water and Community Resilience. The registration for SER 8th World Conference is now open!


Training course: Measuring Ecosystem Services & Essential Biodiversity Variables

This course centers on building capacity in the areas of measuring and quantifying ecosystem services and essential biodiversity variables. The course will take place 16 September – 26 September, 2019, in Kigali, Rwanda and it is open to Africa-based participants. Read more.


International MSc programme on Ecosystem Services at IHI Zittau

The International Institute (IHI) Zittau, TU Dresden, Germany is now accepting applications for the international Masters programme on Ecosystem Services. The programme is devoted to understanding the causes of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation as well as to analysing their impacts on ecosystem functioning and human well-being in an interdisciplinary manner. Natural Capital Checker – beta version launched

The Natural Capital Checker (NatCap Checker) provides practitioners with a self-assessment tool that enables them to assess, communicate and improve the level of confidence in their natural capital assessments. The Checker helps organizations to evaluate how credible and fit for purpose their assessments are, and therefore the level of confidence that stakeholders can place in the process, results, and ultimately the decisions taken based on a natural capital assessment. Vacancy: Doctoral researcher position at University of Kassel.

The Faculty of Organic Agricultural Sciences, Social-Ecological Interactions in Agricultural Systems group at University of Kassel, offers a doctoral position related to the project LANDSCAPE CHAINS – Linking places and processes for sustainability: Social-ecological dynamics and value chains of Mediterranean landscape products. IPBES: Call to support Global Assessment with uptake events

The IPBES Global Assessment of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services is off to a very promising start with unprecedented media coverage. In order to keep up this momentum, IPBES asks you to continue supporting the uptake and use of the IPBES Global Assessment, for instance by arranging events supporting the uptake of the IPBES #GlobalAssessment.
