Farmers Markets Gear Up for 2019 Season
A few farmers markets have already begun the 2019 season in Nebraska, with many more starting up in the next couple of weeks. These markets are a great source for fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables for Nebraskans across the entire state.
For the past several years, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) has administered a USDA-funded grant program that provides coupons to seniors and WIC (Women, Infants and Children) qualifiers to purchase fruits and vegetables from certified vendors at numerous market locations. The Seniors- and WIC-Farmers Market Nutrition Programs promote a healthy lifestyle and benefit produce growers in Nebraska. Certified vendors will begin accepting coupons from eligible participants on June 1, 2019.
NDA has developed a Nebraska Farmers Market and Produce Vendor Search database that contains information on hundreds of produce vendors and farmers markets from across the state. Consumers can search this database to find out locations, days of operation and available vendors for each of the registered market sites. Vendors also have the opportunity to list the types of produce they will be selling.
The Nebraska Farmers Market search tool can be found here.
