CFLA-FCAB’s Response to Order Issuing a Direction to the CRTC (CFLA, May 21)

CFLA-FCAB has issued a response on the Order Issuing a Direction to the CRTC on Implementing the Canadian Telecommunications Policy Objectives to Promote Competition, Affordability, Consumer Interests and Innovation. Its response urges the CRTC "to specifically consider the unique challenges of rural, remote and Indigenous communities." // CFLA-FCAB a publié des commentaires sur le Décret donnant au CRTC des instructions relativement à la mise en œuvre de la politique canadienne de télécommunication pour promouvoir la concurrence, l’abordabilité, les intérêts des consommateurs et l’innovation. Toronto Public Library Joins Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN, May 16)

Martin Dubois nommé directeur général de la Grande Bibliothèque (BAnQ, 22 mai)

DOAJ Reaches Its Funding Target Within 18 Months of Starting Its Fund-Raising Programme (SPARC Europe, May 17)

Transition to Campus Life: The Perceptions of Visually Impaired Students towards Librarians' Communication Skills (N. B. Bodgahi,  L. S. Cheong,  & Z. A. Ngah, Liber Quarterly, May 21)
This article examines the success of a transition programme for visually impaired students in relation to the communication skills of academic librarians. It found that “participants considered librarians’ tone of voice, greetings, and conversation as key factors for a successful transition. They also noted that the main obstacles they faced were the lack of opportunity to interact with librarians and the librarians’ lack of disability awareness and knowledge.” Read more

Frustrations and Roadblocks in Data Reference Librarianship (A. Kubas & J. McBurney, iAssist Quarterly, May 10)
Librarians increasingly need familiarity with data resources and the ability to answer data reference questions. This case study found that “ frustrations are ever present in data reference regardless of how much experience a librarian has, and many frustrations arise due to factors such as patron expectations, subject-specific and data-related jargon, and data formats and accessibility.” Read more
