Letter From Your Councillors

In this e-update we have information on a new initiative 'Oakville Ready', updates on water levels, downtown revitalization and events, the letter writing campaign from We Love Oakville, reminders on Traffic calming and more.
Both Town and Regional Council continue to work to understand and respond to the proposed legislative changes being brought forth by the Provincial government. We have passed motions that continue our tradition of co-operation across the four towns that make up Halton. We are all very concerned about the implications of Bill 108 and in our print newsletter coming to you in the next  2 weeks,  we highlight some of the issues to be aware of.

In our local neighbourhoods,  we express our thanks to all the residents who participated in cleaning up our parks and trails. Together they picked up an embarrassing amount of garbage. Their efforts have helped immensely as our Town staff are very busy  sandbagging and trying to get the grass cut ( on the sunny days).

Are there topics you would like us to write up about each month? We welcome your input.
 See you in the neighborhood.

Stay well,
Dave and Janet

On May 28, 2019 the Town of Oakville and the Halton Environment Network are launching the OakvilleReady program.

OakvilleReady is an initiative to create Oakville neighbourhood extreme weather resiliency hubs using places of worship and other neighbourhood organizations as engagement and care anchors. The goal is to create an Oakville resiliency hub network that engages diverse community stakeholders to increase community capacity and understanding around how we can work to support each other during extreme weather events.

Please join the Oakville Ready Team at Queen Elizabeth Park and Community and Cultural Center in the Blackbox Theater on May 28th from 1-2pm.  The first hour is the launch and media portion. Come and learn more about this new and exciting program. This is your chance to meet the hubs and celebrate with us the start of a new and exciting program that will ensure the community of Oakville is Ready to weather any storm.

Closures Due to High Lake Levels
Residents are reminded to use caution around creeks, ponds and the lake where localized flooding and shoreline erosion have created dangerous conditions. Lake levels remain higher than normal and some areas are prone to sudden flooding and ponding when heavy rainfall is combined with easterly winds. Areas that are taped or fenced off may be unsafe and we ask that residents please respect the closures so that no one gets hurt.
Staff are inspecting our shoreline, lakeside parks and harbours daily to assess conditions and take action where required.
Closures
The following areas are closed and will reopen when it is safe to do so:
  • Coronation Park (west side of the park is closed due to wet, saturated conditions – playgrounds and parking is open)
  • Edgemere Park
  • Erchless Estate - Larry Cain Trail to Oakville Club
  • Gairloch Gardens - from the rose garden south
  • Bronte west pier
  • Oakville east pier
  • Waterfront Trail - from West Street to Timber Lane
Our sports fields may also be closed as a result of the wet weather. For more information about the status of sports fields, visit our Sports Field Closures and Facilities Updates page.
If water threatens to flood structures or roadways, please contact ServiceOakville at 905-845-6601 or service@oakville.ca.

Downtown Revitalization AKA Construction
We sat down with the Downtown Construction Engineers to strongly emphasize  the anxiousness of the businesses and residents and requests for more action. Road construction is complicated with several different elements needing to be dug up, disconnected, lined or replaced, then reconnected and then the hole has to be covered everyday for safety. The crews are scheduled based on the different skills/work that has to be done in a specific order and too many people in one area at one time does not speed up the process. When one job is  planned to  take the entire day and they finish early we will see them head home . Unfortunately bringing in another crew  to start work for just 3 hours is not viable. This past week they brought in a crew to get the Sanitary lines by Dunn started while continuing at the Navy end. The contractor is keen to get the project completed ahead of schedule and reports they are on schedule even with the rain and winds.
In addition to your efforts to shop Downtown, please reach out to your friends and pass the word: open for business and the ambassadors are being very helpful. Merchants have opened their back doors to make access from the parking lots easier.
The Project Office, located in the former Post Office at 193 Church Street, is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and by appointment. This location is information central for the reconstruction of Lakeshore Road. Staff are on-hand, ready to provide information and answer any questions.

Help keep our streets safe!

We regularly get calls asking how we can get  our  neighbours to SLOW DOWN. It starts with each of us leaving a few minutes earlier so we do not feel the pressure to press harder on the gas pedal!

Council will receive a Traffic study  this summer and be discussing how we can further  support these concerns. For now we  have  purchased more  "slow down signs" which we are pleased to drop off as a reminder to your neighbours. In addition we are looking into how in the budget we can include additional flashing light or digital speed signs.

What is that?
Annual larviciding is once again underway to reduce the risk of West Nile virus (WNV) in Oakville. Larviciding is the process of applying pesticides to areas with standing water, such as catch basins and storm water ponds, where mosquito larvae are commonly found. Larviciding will repeat every 3 weeks during the West Nile virus season.
This preventative program will run until August in an attempt to reduce the adult mosquito population and help to stop the mosquitoes that can carry West Nile virus. The pesticide kills mosquito larvae, helping to reduce the mosquito population that could carry West Nile virus. A different coloured dot is sprayed on the catch basin after each application to indicate that treatment has been completed.

Conservation Halton Gala: Dress Rugged Formal
Just as friluftsliv refreshes the spirit, we are relaunching the Foundation Gala with a renewed vision and a refined purpose. Friluftsliv promises to be a premier fundraising event, with some of the most influential members of our community, but this isn’t going to be your average evening. This event will bring together the industrial feel of a warehouse venue, with the stunning restoration results of the surrounding quarry and elements of nature integrated into every aspect of the event, until the lines between “inside” and “outdoors” are blurred. Tickets include delicious food, inspiring presentations, a series of interactive experiences, music and other entertainment, a bonfire on the beach and exclusive access to the award-winning Kelso Quarry before it is open to the public. Dress code is “rugged-formal” so leave the high heels at home.  Proceeds from the Gala fund Conservation Halton Foundation projects and programs that protect the natural areas in our watershed, create opportunities to connect with nature, educate our children about the environment and inspire stewardship in our communities.
