Pastor's Devotional...

Unbelievable! Fred Rogers from Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood children’s show is #35 on the TV Guide list of 50 greatest TV stars! I still remember thinking “What a dorky dude he is!” as Annie and Jack watched. How can you explain that at its peak the show was watched by a whopping 8% of households, a huge rating success. Here’s my take:
- Authenticity; nerdiness and all, he was himself. “One of the greatest gifts you can give anybody is the gift of honest self. I believe kids can spot a phony a mile away.”
- AS a child Fred was awkward and overweight and often abused as a result of being ”Fat Freddy”. He was painfully shy and withdrawn as a result. You can often feel his compassion for the marginalized on his shows. (What’s your scar? How can it be used to touch and heal?)
- Celebrate the joy of the routine. He had the same opening and closing every show, coat, sweater, shoes on/off. (The sweaters were knit by his mother and one is displayed in the Smithsonian as a tribute to his cultural impact.) There can be strength, peace, comfort and joy in the routine and the structure of daily life. Celebrate it!
Holy Spirit, thank you for touching so many young lives through the ministry of Fred Rogers. Teach me through his example and use my life as a model of faithfulness and service. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
P.S. Mr. Rogers was an ordained Presbyterian pastor and felt strongly his show was his pulpit.
