It stared with a small lesson - teaching children that kindness is like a ripple in the water; if we each do something small it makes a big impact....Then we started looking at the small things we could do to make another smile! On June 9th, after church, we will gather together, as many as are able, and go into the community with our ideas on how to spread kindness. We're calling this event AmazinGrace. The hope with the AmazinGrace event is to get people together as a church community and perform small random acts of kindness in our larger Calgary community. Woodcliff is a community with big compassionate hearts and this is a chance for us to spend time doing what we love in the community. Our hope is that we will be able to gather at least 10 people after church to work as a team to do good. The acts of kindness we perform do not require physical strength or stamina, nor do they have a 'too old/too young' label. We have not met our minimum participants yet and would love if you would consider being a part of this initiative. Please sign up in the Narthex to be a part of the day - you must sign up in advance so we can be ready. Thank you. Your ripple makes a difference.

Sheri
Thank you to the Women of Woodcliff for hosting another wonderful Strawberry Social. It was a wonderful and delicious afternoon.
Needles and Pins is putting together Afghans for the Sherriff King. We are looking for 8"x8" knot squares. We hope to have several afghans to present to the Sheriff King in June. Please pick up yarn from Rhonda Dietzler or Mary Ann Christie. Finished squares can be dropped off with them as well or at the church office by the end of May.

A PLACE OF WORSHIP, A PLACE OF HOPE

Our gifts for Mission & Service support displaced people in Canada. Dr. Kathy Yamashita reflects on what it means to be a Japanese Canadian in light of the Japanese Canadian internment camps during World War II, and the support of Mission & Service of The United Church of Canada that works with the small Japanese United Church to grow into the multicultural church it is today.

“The relocation camps were in the interior of British Columbia and in southern Alberta, where those in the camps did hard labour sugar beet farming. During this time, The United Church of Canada supported Japanese people through the The Board of Home Missions program. We had missionaries who helped us with high school education, as the province only provided elementary education in the relocation camps. They helped us to remain as a Christian community that supported each other through those difficult times.

“After the war, those who were of the Japanese congregation in southern Alberta continued to worship together and eventually purchased an old hall in Lethbridge, Alberta. As time went on, the Japanese United Church was less dependent on the Japanese language, and thankfully, with support from Mission & Service, it has grown into a multicultural United Church. We worship in English. We are now financially stable and value Mission & Service, remembering the help we received in the past. Through reading Minutes for Mission in church, we have learned of the good work done through our giving for Mission & Service.”

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.
