Ballard Multimodal Corridor

5/23/19 – Ballard Multimodal Corridor construction update

This week, we continued installing new storm drainage structures and pipe runs along NW 54th St and NW Market St from 32nd Ave NW to 28th Ave NW. Next week, we’ll continue working east, installing drainage structures between 28th Ave NW and 24th Ave NW.

Crews have also started sawcutting in advance of concrete roadway and sidewalk demolition on the north side of NW 54th St, between 32nd Ave NW and NW Market St. Once the area is cleared, crews will realign the roadway to the north to make room for the widened sidewalk/joint use trail on the south side of NW 54th St. This work includes pouring new concrete roadway panels, curbs, driveways, and sidewalks. Keep an eye out for related sidewalk closures and pedestrian detours. Driveways will remain open for the duration of this work.

As a reminder, we’ve placed a detour on NW Market St and NW 54th St between 30th Ave NW and 32nd Ave NW. As soon as next week crews will be installing traffic control on NW Market St between 30th Ave NW and 24th Ave NW. On-street parking on NW Market St between 30th Ave NW and 24th Ave NW will be reduced. Please refer to the city parking map for alternate parking options.
Read on for details about upcoming work in the project area.
Upcoming work

A 4-way stop will be installed at 32nd Ave NW and NW Market St following Memorial Day weekend in order to increase safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians traveling through the area.

Crews will continue drainage work on NW 54th St and behind the Nordic Museum.

King County Metro plans to do transit pole work in the project corridor in the coming weeks. For more information, visit their website or contact them directly.

The location of the bus stop on NW 54th St will change in the coming days. The bus stop, currently in front of the Ballard Locks, will be moved to the west to allow crews to demolish and rebuild the sidewalk. Please also note that the charter bus load zone west of the Metro bus stop will be removed temporarily to accommodate this new bus stop location.

Traffic and parking restrictions on NW Market St between 30th Ave NW and 24th Ave NW will go into effect after Memorial Day weekend. In order to complete the Market Phase of construction, crews will be reducing NW Market St to one lane in each direction. This will require temporary removal of some on-street parking.
What to expect during project construction
  • General work hours from 7 AM to 7 PM, Monday through Friday
  • Crews may work some nights and weekends to minimize impacts to traffic during weekday commute times
  • On-street parking and lane restrictions near work locations
  • Temporary sidewalk and crosswalk closures with signed detours
  • Noise, dust, concrete odors, and vibration
  • Access to businesses and residences will remain open
  • Work is weather dependent, so timing of work may change if needed
