1MK Upward Updates

This past week was a very short one with just 2 school days. Everyone was looking forward to the 5-day festive holidays. Nevertheless, a few classes managed to squeeze in a field trip before the long break.

Last Tuesday saw some of our CAP 3 and Grades 4-5 students take a dive into the world of banking and finance at Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery. The interactive museum provided quite the impressive array of exhibits including actual Malaysian Ringgit collections from years ago. Students were definitely intrigued to say the least. It was a fun-filled learning experience for all. What a way to kickstart the Raya holidays!

On another note, we are excited to introduce an ongoing series of stories, taking a peek into the lives of students that grace our classrooms. This series is called "MindSpace Journey Journals", told from the perspective of teachers and staff.

Here is our inaugural story:

"Sue is a 16-year-old indigenous student who has been with MindSpace since 2017. She comes from a single parent household where dad cares for the younger ones at home, while she and some of the older siblings live here in KL. Sue and her eldest brother take on parental roles at home, ensuring they are all fed, cared for and well rested. Amidst all this, it’s no surprise Sue’s educational journey has not been a walk in the park. However, this is not a story of struggles. This is a story of hope.

This is Sue’s story of Inclusion.

Warm, helpful and constantly wreathed in smiles, Sue is never short of her dose of enthusiasm. MindSpace was Sue’s first taste of an English learning environment, and everything was unfamiliar and new. When she first started, all of Sue’s lessons were translated to Malay as it was the only other language she spoke beside her native dialect. Her teachers soon realized that Malay was also only a second language to her and she often needed a hand with that as well. However, she rallied on and has now picked up English too. She sometimes still
struggles with her vocabulary and her sentences are often a direct translation from the language she thinks in, but her passion for learning only grows and grows.

Sue is now getting ready to jump a grade as she assimilates into the mainstream classrooms. Reaching this point in her journey has not just been a learning process for her, but also for the entire MindSpace community.

Sue stands as an integral part of MindSpace; she teaches us every day what living and learning successfully in an inclusive
community can look like."

Check out the next episode of MindSpace Journey Journals in a week.

Meanwhile, a preview on what's coming up next.....
