Cara Awarded MBE

For exceptional and  inspirational leadership during the 2018 nerve agent attacks.

Her Majesty, The Queen, has announced as part of her birthday honours list that the Chief Executive of Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust, Cara Charles-Barks, will be honoured with a MBE.

The MBE has been bestowed on Mrs Charles-Barks as she showed exceptional and inspirational leadership during the 2018 nerve agent attacks.

Her leadership enabled the Trust to provide world-class care to patients, which demonstrated the skill of the NHS and earning admiration, both throughout the country and around the world.

Commenting, Cara Charles-Barks said:

"This is a great honour. I feel that this is recognition of the work of all the staff at Salisbury District Hospital.

Each of our staff played a part in keeping the hospital open and running smoothly through the first nerve
agent attack on European soil since World War II and the longest running major incident in the NHS’s 70 year history. Hospital staff did what they do each day; they gave outstanding care to our community.

I am humbled by their commitment and care for people in Salisbury and I am delighted to accept this honour."

Cara is the daughter of proud parents Bob & Deadra Leditschke of Eudunda, and grew up on the family farm at Point Pass, studying at the Eudunda Area School, with final years at Immanuel College before University. She began her career in 1990, as a registered nurse in Australia, before moving to England where she has now settled with family. She has given 11 years of service to the NHS, joining Salisbury District Hospital as the Chief Executive in February 2017.

Cara appointed as Honorary Colonel for 243 (the Wessex) Field Hospital

Her Majesty, The Queen, has also appointed Cara as Honorary Colonel for 243 (the Wessex) Field Hospital, part of the Army Reserve Medical Services.

Over 183 healthcare professionals from all clinical specialties and grades, from across the South West and Hampshire, make up the unit and deliver vital medical support, wherever in the world where the British Army is deployed and under any conditions.

Commenting on her appointment, Cara Charles-Barks said:
"Staff at Salisbury hospital serve in the Army Reserve Medical Services, so this is a great honour for me and recognition of Salisbury hospital’s long-standing commitment to the military."
Cara commenced her duties by attending to the Clinical Training Camp in Weymouth, on 15 and 16 June 2019.

Well Done Cara, your home district is very proud of you and your achievements.

District Suffers Many Heavy Frosts Mid June

This Morning At Eudunda -0.6 Degrees

Eudunda and the region is not a stranger to heavy frosts, but the current bout of them is making life difficult for those who have to be outside working, especially those who have taken advantage of some recent rain and are busy sowing thier paddocks late into the night in the hope of getting a crop this year. It also affects anyone starting early for work. Typically when there is a heavy frost, the day can be quite pleasant (in the sun).

On Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) the last 7 days Minimum recorded temperature at the Eudunda Post Office (Weather Station) have been

17th 5.0, 18th 5.1, 19th 1.0, 20th 1.5, 21st 1.8, 22nd 0.4, 23rd -0.5, 24th -0.6

Successful Goyder Business Breakfast

‘Business & Tourism – A Future Focus’

Held on the 13th June the Regional Council of Goyder Business Breakfast was well attended, having some 60 booked in to the Eudunda RSL Rooms. Visitors from as far as Hallett and Burra also attended, giving a very good cross section of the region.

Special guest presenter Ali Uren from Kiikstart spoke about how she has been in touch with our Councillors
"I have done some research on what has been put 'out there', what the state of play is, what are the realities, what are some of the opportunities, what are some of the roadblocks and created the presentation that will allow us to get to know what has to happen to really execute those ideas.

"If we are going to create a really strong region (not just Burra, although important), but an actual regional response across that region what do we need to consider and what do we need to get right, which will be much more valuable moving forward... to be creative, smart"

One of the questions Ali put to the group was,

"In your opinion what would be a valuable tourism experience or product that you want to take to the market?"

Ideas from the attendees were positive and constructive, with suggestions of highlighting the great motorcycle rides in this district being one that, surprisingly the region had lost focus on promoting over the years, another of our "Hidden Treasures" just waiting to be picked up again.

A big thanks to our local businesses, Kooky's Kafe and Catering supplying the great breakfast and the Eudunda Bakery for the hot drinks to keep up warm and awake.

Sadly Ali ran out of time to deliver what she had set out to do, and discussions will be held at the next ECBAT meeting this coming Tuesday night about continuing the conversation with our ECBAT members and the community and to help with the next Business Breakfast.

MORE DISCUSSION CAN BE FOUND ON THE ECBAT WEBSITE or arrange to view a video of the event (details also on the website)

Country Fabric's 'N' Things-On The Road Again

A Great Tourism Drawcard for over 25 Years

Margaret Doecke recently celebrated her 25th year in business, not only serving the region with her fabulous fabrics and quilting gear, but during that time has been very pro-active in promoting her store and the district.

During the last few months she has packed up some of her stock and attended events in other parts of the state. First off was a trip to Mannum where they were celebrating "International Quilter's Day".
Margaret has always found people have been very appreciative of the effort made in going to visit thier event.

On May 15th Margaret and Marie showed thier wares at the Quilters' Guild of South Australia Inc meeting in Adelaide. they took along some beautiful fabrics, kits, panels and designs as the 'resident shop'. The group thanked Margaret and her Country Fabrics 'n" Things from Eudunda for travelling to Adelaide to feature at the Guild daytime meeting.

Eudunda Show Planning Well Under Way

Shaun Blenkiron of Gumshire Hampshire Pork To Open Show

Since the AGM of the Eudunda Show Society the committee has been busy planning for the 2019 show.

The theme this year being “Year of the Pig”.

The idea came partly from that this year is the Chinese Year of the pig and that the committee recognise that the pig has been a important animal in the history of the district and remains so, even today with many piggeries in the area.

A passionate local pork producer, Shaun Blenkiron of Gumshire Hampshire Pork & Bacon, will be opening the show and also having a trade site to sell thier own local grown and processed produce.

Shaun has always seen the importance of Agricultural Shows and has had a string of successes at the Royal Adelaide Show. They go to many competitions around Australia, and place well. The Blenkiron Family, including Shaun and his wife Amy, are part of Gumshire Hampshire Pork & Bacon, a family business as they work together in a most successful way.

Most recently they had well deserved wins at the 2019 Sydney Royal Easter Show, with Champion Group A Boar, and Reserve Junior champion Group A Sow.They won many more classes and took out the MOST SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITOR IN GROUP A.

Shaun is also very keen on Motorcycles and has been involved in the local 24hr Reliability Trial both competitively and on the Committee for many years.

Eudunda Caravan Park - Updates

New heavy duty coin operated washer and dryer &
New Phone Number 0498 858 186

The facilities at the Eudunda Caravan Park are slowly being improved as funding becomes available.

One advancement has been to put in a good quality washer and dryer. They are good sized ones, and will take larger loads.

Eudunda Community, Business and Tourism (ECBAT) Chairperson, Trevor Mathews said that if locals wished to use the facilities they were welcome. The units are able to handle bedding such as dunas.
One word of caution though is that the units should not be used for pet bedding or horse rugs.
Some locals have already availed themselves of the facilities and were very happy with the units. We have also had very positive comments from campers who were happy they could use the facilities.

Local access to the Laundry Facilities is via contacting Trevor at the Eudunda Post Office

New Caravan Park Phone Number 0498 858 186

The caravan park is maintained by a small group of volunteers,  and as times have been busy, and some volunteers going on holidays, contacts to book the park has occasionally become harder.

At the last Eudunda Community, Business and Tourism (ECBAT) committee meeting it was decided to purchase a mobile phone that could be carried by whomever was the current contact.
The new phone number is  0498 858 186, and we hope this will streamline bookings.

Check out the Eudunda Caravan Park Website (please recommend it to everyone)

Robertstown District Facing New Challenge

Viterra Grain Silo Close

Robertstown silos are an imposing feature of the town, notably visible from the next nearest Silos at Eudunda some 21km away will close. The announcement from Viterra is that mostly in South Australia  and some Victorian 17 sites will close.

The Robertstown Silo closure hits the region hard, right on top of the drought, yet it is that same drought which probably helped make Viterra's decision. Another being that they are giving preference to the larger storage facilities and replying on larger transport to deliver to these sites.

The Local Farmers are now faced with many unexpected challenges, from extra transport costs, through to not having enough grain to justify the trip, or having to consider combining with other cooperating farmers to make the transport economic, and the challenges that are faced with combining loads.

Additionally Viterra has decided to decommission the bunker storage at Eudunda (located on the three chain road) because it had been under-utilised.

Dust the Blues Away - Drought Relief 28th June

This is a follow up to the very successful “Day in the Dust” event at Robertstown last month and is funded by the Australian Government 'Drought Communities Program' funding that the Regional Council of Goyder received from the Commonwealth Government.

Although we have had a bit of rain, there is still the unknown as to what this season will look like for farmers and businesses, so we encourage the community to come along, show their support and enjoy a great night of good  music, food and entertainment.
