INN Days 2019 Kicks Off Tomorrow in Houston


INN Days, the largest nonprofit news conference of the year, starts tomorrow at The Four Seasons Houston to a sold-out audience of more than 200 attendees and continues through Thursday. If you won't be attending, follow and join the conversation on social media at #INNDays2019. This is the biggest event of the year that celebrates the growth and learnings of nonprofit news. If you are registered for the event, check the email that was sent with instructions to download the mobile app to view the agenda, attendee list, map of the hotel and more. 

 

Eight Nonprofit News Leaders Running for INN’s Board of Directors


INN members: You have until 9 am CST on Thursday, June 13 to vote for the candidates who will represent you in three open seats on INN's Board of Directors. Ballots were sent directly to the voting contact at each INN member organization. If you have not received your ballot, email info@inn.org.

These seats are currently held by Anne Galloway of VTDigger, Sheila Krumholz of the Center for Responsive Politics and Laura Frank of Rocky Mountain PBS. Their two-year terms are up for renewal. All three are running for re-election. 

Five new candidates are also seeking to represent the membership. They are Julie Drizin of Current, Lucas Grindley of Next City, Daniel Heimpel of The Chronicle for Social Change, Trip Jennings of New Mexico In Depth and Regina Starr Ridley of Bay Nature.

Larry Horne Joins INN as Development Director
 

Larry Horne joins INN this week in a new role as development director, based in New York. Horne will lead INN’s revenue strategy with a focus on establishing a major gifts program and diversifying the grant funding portfolio that supports services, programs and growth for a network of more than 210 member newsrooms.

Horne brings more than 30 years of experience in fundraising and nonprofit management to INN, including senior roles at the National Coalition Against Censorship, The Public Theater, the Trust for Public Land, AIDS Service Center NYC and the Hedrick-Martin Institute.

In addition to his work with the National Coalition Against Censorship, Horne's media involvement has included programming consulting work for KCET, a Los Angeles PBS station, the Independent Television Service, and documentary film production.

What We're Watching: Digital News Report 2019


The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford will launch the Digital News Report 2019—the biggest study of its kind about digital media consumption—at The Tow Center on June 17. Drawing on 75,000 respondents in 38 markets, the Digital News Report 2019 offers up-to-date insights on how people find news and use media. The report covers issues including the business of journalism, disinformation, and the role of social media. Registration for the launch event in NYC is free although registration is required.

  • Reporting by Investigative Post that showed how the Buffalo Police Department put Officer Craig Lehner in harm’s way before his drowning in 2017 has won the top investigative story broadcast award in 2018 on radio stations in mid-sized markets from the New York State Associated Press.
  • PublicSource won 13 state and regional awards in recent weeks for its reporting.  
  • The Connecticut Health Investigative Team won three awards at the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists dinner on May 23 including first place for an investigative story on the examination of how nurses struggle with addiction, first place in the health coverage category for a story on the barriers to health care and second place in the diversity category for a story about maternal mortality outcomes. Wisconsin Watch, Voice of OC, Mother Jones, ProPublica and Reveal are among the first 50 newsrooms evaluated for transparency by PEN America. Explore the Newsroom Transparency Tracker.

The Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting joins ProPublica's Local Reporting Network, along with The Frontier. For the next year, the organization will work with ProPublica on a local investigation in Kentucky while The Frontier will focus on a year-long project on health care in Oklahoma. Learn more.

Impact: The TurboTax giveaway was scrapped thanks to a series of ProPublica stories highlighting the various ways companies trick people into paying taxes online.
