Councilmember Mark Treyger & OBT Partnership to Provide Bridge Program in Coney Island Featured on News 12 Brooklyn
On Wednesday, June 5 Councilmember Mark Treyger toured Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow's bridge program at O'Dwyer Gardens Community Center on Coney Island, which has been providing high school equivalency courses, job readiness, placement and wrap around services to local residents. The program was developed to serve residents 3 years ago after the Councilmember realized that many of his constituents were unable to participate in the job opportunities stemming from the Superstrom Sandy recovery due to their low skills and credentials.
“We need to invest in bridge programming; we need to invest in building capacity to equip our residents with skills. This is not just a Coney issue, even though Coney has almost a double than average unemployment rate - there are other neighborhoods in NYC that have just as much need, if not greater,” said Councilmember Treyger. “We need to invest resources, and bridge programs are so worth it because we’re investing in people. I am deeply committed to not only expanding this program here in Coney but across the 5 boroughs to connect residents with not just a job but a career that can sustain themselves and their families.”
Liliana Polo-McKenna, CEO of OBT and a NYCETC Board Member, said, “What we’ve learned doing this program as a workforce non-profit is that it takes a community of supporters and a significant amount of resources to look at and provide the academics, workforce development, case management services, food supports, transportation - all of those ingredients are absolutely essential to making a program successful and to be able to support someone to completion.”
NYACH Industry Briefs Share Lessons on Home Health Aide, Bilingual Medical Assistant & Certified Recovery Peer Advocate Trainings
The New York Alliance for Careers in Healthcare (NYACH) published three new industry briefs, which each share valuable learnings and industry intelligence that have been gleaned from their work and benefit the broader healthcare and workforce development fields:
Improving Job Quality for Home Health Aides: Reflections on NYACH’s Quality Home Care Training Initiative shares learnings from NYACH’s Quality Home Care Training Initiative focused on improving job quality for home health aides. The brief provides an overview of the policy landscape and overarching context for the challenges facing the homecare workforce, an overview of the training program, which includes the outcomes of the trainings, and reflections around how to move the workforce further.
Meeting a Demand for Bilingual Medical Assistants: Overview and Lessons on the Training Model reflects on NYACH’s Bilingual Medical Assistant program to glean learnings on effectively providing occupational training in healthcare to English language learners in New York City. This includes best practices for integrating occupational and English as a Second or Other Language training, building bridges to training, and targeting specific New York City populations to meet employer demand and leverage the existing skills of New Yorkers.
The Integration of Certified Recovery Peer Advocates: Lessons from NYACH’s Behavioral Health Conference is a synthesis of the learnings from NYACH’s Behavioral Health Conference on December 10th, 2018 on best practices for the integration of Certified Recovery Peer Advocates into service delivery models. The conference convened key leaders in the peer space to address pressing challenges currently faced by behavioral health providers in effectively incorporating peers into their service delivery models.

As the days narrow down to a final budget that we expect to be adopted within the next two weeks, we need to keep the pressure growing on our Council members to make sure the momentum we're building turns into action and millions of dollars in real investments for our communities.

Action: Email and call your Council Member (find phone number here) to tell them to support $70 million in investments in Bridge Programs in the final adopted budget (esp if they are part of BNT, see list below)
Sample script: We at {your organization} know that there are many important issues for the City Council to negotiate with the Mayor in this year’s budget. But we wanted to take the time to ask you to support a $70 investment in Bridge Programs to be included in the final adopted budget.
We are grateful to you and the Council for helping so many New Yorkers to overcome poverty and secure full-time employment through your partnerships with workforce development programs like ours. If more Bridge Programs were available in our community, they would open up new career pathways for people who are locked out of occupational skills training programs due to their challenges with reading, math or English language. We at {your organization} see clients every day who would benefit from more access to programs like these.
So when you’re engaging with the Mayor and your Council colleagues over the next two weeks about budget priorities, we urge you to remember that when you fight for full funding of Bridge Programs, you’re fighting for programs like ours and the low-income or low-skill clients we serve in your community.
