QPTV Producer Oswald Williams Wins Again at Hometown Media Awards

QPTV is proud to announce that QPTV Producer, Oswald Williams, has once again taken top honors in the 2019 Hometown Media Awards competition.
His documentary short, Pieces, won first place in the category of Best Experimental Program. Oswald’s, Pieces, was inspired by the 1992 film Juice that starred Tupac Shakur. His previous win was for A Father and a Daughter, a five part original series.

As a community producer, Mr. Williams writes about “ordinary characters dealing with real life. We all come from different circumstances but we can’t let those circumstances define us.”
Mr. Williams said that coming to QPTV was the best second phase of his life. The first phase was to receive validation for his creative vision and abilities, which he certainly has achieved.
Mr. Williams’ next project will deal with the subject of stereotypes.

Queens Perspectives Presents
Dennis Walcott at the Queens Public Library

Sex and the City actor Sarah Jessica Parker is asking fellow New Yorkers to post sticky notes about why they love their libraries. QPTV coincidentally just completed a show about the libraries in Queens NY. Here’s a “Sticky Note” in support for the Queens Public Library.

Dennis M. Walcott makes it his personal ritual to greet visitors as they enter the library in the morning. Dennis has a highly regarded personal approach as he oversees one of the nation’s largest public library systems, with 65 locations in the most diverse place on earth.  The organization serves approximately 2.3 million people and circulates among the highest numbers of books and other library materials in the country. The former chancellor of the New York City public school system and a deputy mayor under Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Dennis joined the Library in 2016 after serving as the New York State - appointed monitor of the East Ramapo School District in Rockland County.

The motto for the Queens Public Library “We speak your language.” The organization is able to meet the communities’ needs with state of the art facilities that provide books, entertainment, programs, and services that make NYC a stronger place to live, learn, and play.

Did you know that in addition to books and eBooks, the library offers a variety of music, movies, games, and digital media to meet informational, educational, cultural, and recreational interests of Queens’ residents. They also have programs with a wide range of interests from: Gentle Yoga, Shape Up NYC; Perfect Form Bodyweight Bootcamp to Pathway to U.S. Citizenship. If you need employment they provide services that help you open the door to opportunities with their Job and Business Academy. They are known for their Adult Literacy, Children / Teen Programs, Computers and Wi-Fi, and Health Information services. Lastly, if you have a library card, you can get free admission to dozens of cultural institutions, museums and attractions. Save money and discover more about your city with “Culture Pass.” The aforementioned services and programs are just a few examples of services that you could participate in when you visit the Queens Public Library.

Journalists from Uzbekistan Visit QPTV

Tuesday April 30, 2019 saw the arrival of a group of visiting journalists from Uzbekistan. The visiting journalists are part of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitors Leadership Program.
With each visit of journalists from a foreign nation, we are reminded of the importance and need for independent media, especially in countries where the citizens are struggling against oppressive governments.
The professional objectives, of the U. S. Department of State’s, International Visitor’s Leadership Program are stated as follows:
  • Examine the rights and responsibilities of a free press in a democracy;
  • Explore operational practices, standards, and institutions of the media;
  • Gain insight into American social, economic, and political structures;
  • Learn about current trends and challenges in the media profession;
  • Explore foreign affairs reporting;
  • Learn about the work of government spokespersons at the local, state and federal levels;
  • Learn about journalism schools and training in the world of new media.

QPTV can make a strong case for being a supporter of citizen journalism. Although local access centers are not journalistic hubs, local coverage of local events is central to what access centers do. Learning centers for citizen journalism can be a game changing initiative.

Nightly news reports are increasingly using footage recorded by citizen journalists armed with cell phones and digital cameras. QPTV and other Community Access Organizations can and should become learning centers for local and, perhaps, international journalists.
