The acquisition of Looker by Google is a welcomed event for our community (Read the story here).
Now we have 3 tech giants: Poly, Amazon, and Google/Looker. At Santa Cruz Works, we stand for a community that lives, works, and plays in the same place. Tech jobs allow families to own homes, pay taxes, and give back. And while the average wage of a Santa Cruz tech worker is just barely above our super high cost of living, Tech jobs have a 6x multiplier: for every tech job, 5 more jobs are created in local goods and services.
It is our hope that city leaders are waking up to the ugly realities caused by negligence and misaligned priorities. We have an inexcusable deficit of affordable housing. Over the past 2 years, the cost of living has increased by more than 20%, outpacing household income*. Furthermore, tolerating antisocial behavior in our public spaces is totally at odds with a vibrant, self-directed future.
Embrace tech. This rising tide lifts all boats. - Santa Cruz Works
