WHAT TO EXPECT

PENTECOST SUNDAY & COMMITMENT SUNDAY THIS WEEK, JUNE 9
I invite you to join us at 10 am this Sunday and I encourage you to wear red, orange or yellow to add to the visual festivity of the day. It’s Pentecost, a big festive day celebrating the day the Holy Spirit blew through the lives of the disciples and the early church was formed. Communion will be celebrated. The choir and praise band will both be leading us in spirited music. Barb Hall and Peggy Rein will sing a special solo as well! Youth will be commissioned at the close of the service and will leave for their mission trip to St. Louis.   The scripture texts are: Acts 2:1-13 and Psalm 133 with its celebration of unity: "How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!"

Eugene Peterson who has been our guide through the Psalms says in light of Psalm 133: "Our membership in the church is a corollary of our faith in Christ. We can no more be a Christian and have nothing to do with the church than we can be a person and not be in a family. When we become Christians, we are among brothers and sisters in faith. No Christian is an only child."

This Sunday is Generosity Sunday as well as Pentecost Sunday. This Psalm puts into song what is said and demonstrated throughout Scripture: community is essential. God never works in isolation for isolation, but always with people in community and for a common purpose. This unity is expressed this Sunday on our Generosity Sunday when individuals and households are asked to contribute and make a pledge for the coming year. Earlier in the week every household received an invitation and challenge in the mail to join the climb as we climb together to higher ground in terms of the opportunities before the church. Information and online pledge cards can be found on our website.   Additional materials will be available Sunday morning for you to pick up.

Mission Trip Begins this Sunday!

This Sunday, our EBPC Youth will leave for their annual Mission Trip to St. Louis to help others in need. Our Youth Group will work at organizations across the city helping different types of people. They are scheduled to visitIsaiah 58, a food pantry and clothing store; Lydias House, a domestic violence shelter; Kingdom House, setting up a summer program for at-risk youth; and Church on the Streets, an organization where our youth will spend fellowship time with people in the neighborhood eating pizza and playing foosball.

This trip marks a special occasion as Youth Minister Kelly will be leaving for her 12th and final mission trip as a leader with the EBPC Youth Group. Her son, Jeremy will be attending his 7th mission trip, and Tess, the other senior on this trip will be going on her 6th (See picture below of Jeremey and Tess at graduation. Youth Group truly builds friendships that last a lifetime!)
Celebrate and Honor Youth Minister Kelly with us!
in Two Sundays

Join us Sunday, June 16 to celebrate and honor our wonderful, Kelly McConnell, as she ends her 12 years as our Youth Minister. We will surely miss her presence and work with our youth and teens these last years, but are so grateful she will still be a part of our EBPC community. Please join us on Sunday for a special celebration to thank her for her service!
Mark your Calendar for our Joint Service
with Nueva Vida!

June 30 @ 11 a.m.

Last year, Iglesia Presbiteriana Nueva Vida brought 80 people from their church to EBPC for a joint worship - sharing our common love of God and all God provides. This year, we are invited to join Nueva Vida and the congregation of Glencliff at their church in a bilingual service. Please make plans as our main worship service moves from happening at our place to their place. We will celebrate communion together. Lindsey will provide the time with the children and John will preach. A luncheon fellowship will follow and participants are encouraged to bring food to share.

Let's show the members of Nueva Vida the same joy and love they showed us last year as we build a community together. More details will be shared soon about opportunities to car pool, but please mark your calendar now!

Welcome to the EBPC Children's Corner!

What if summer was a time to renew, rejuvenate, and restore? What if your summer adventures brought you closer together as a family and deepened your faith as a family unit?

This summer at EBPC, our theme for our Children's Ministry is ReNEW! From our more laid back Sunday morning classes to our Summer Shenanigans and trip to visit our friends at Nueva Vida, our children and families will learn that God’s creation is a gift we all share.

Caring for God's creation—together—is both a good work and collective act of faith. Our summer programming weaves together the rich natural imagery in Jesus' Parable of the Sower with engaging activities kids and adults will love. Our prayer is that our summer "ReNEW" programming will be a gift to you and your family!

Join us on select Saturdays this summer at the homes of some of our EBPC families for good old-fashioned summer fun. Invite your friends and neighbors to join us for water play, popsicles, and a chance to learn more about God's creation and how we can take care of it!

Kids getting stir crazy at home? Load them up and come play with us. Adults and kids will love these carefree gatherings where we can grow and play together in God's great creation! Mark your calendar for second Shenanigan on June 15 from 4-8pm when we will gather at the Randall home for a waterfest! Wear your swimsuit, bring a towel and a helmet if you wish to ride the motorized cars!

Your Invitation to be "Inspired"
From Lindsey Hinds-Brown

I started reading Rachel Held Evans' "Inspired" a few weeks ago and after the first chapter I knew I wanted to share the experience with the women I hold in the highest regard. I would love to hear your thoughts and learn from your experiences! I hope you do too!  You are invited to join our "Inspired" Book Club.

In her introductory notes to the reading guide, Evans wrote, "Inspired is intended to be read, wrestled with, discussed, debated, and creatively engaged with in the context of community. And that’s precisely because the Bible invites us to do the same... My aim is for readers to encounter the Bible with their questions, doubts, and imaginations fully engaged."

Questions? Doubts? Imaginations? We all have those. What better place to explore those than together among women of faith? Starting Wednesday, June 19, participants will meet every other week in group member homes to wrestle with Evan's ideas about scripture and reflect on our own journeys of faith.

Interested in joining the book club? Email Lindsey. Interested in learning more about "Inspired"? Check out Rachel Held Evan's website HERE.
This Sunday is Stewardship Sunday.  During our current sermon series, we are looking at five of the Ascent psalms in the Book of Psalms, using a diverse array of music, spoken word, and maybe even a bar graph and pie chart or two. The focus will not only upon the individual (e.g. our priorities, our joy, our service), but the EBPC community as a whole as we are invited to climb to a higher level of ministry and service through our Stewardship.

We hope you will join us this Sunday to help EBPC continue to climb to higher ground together!

It may be June, but Nate is getting ready for Christmas!
We've got big news!

Recently, the EBPC Session and church members approached Nate about recording a Christmas CD as a fundraiser for the church’s mission fund, and of course, Nate said "Yes!" Thanks to some anonymous donors who have stepped up to fund a portion of this project, Nate will be recording at Oceanway Studio on Music Row next week along with Matt Combs and other talented musicians from around Nashville. They will record Nate’s arrangements of Christmas favorites in an Appalachian style. The hope this we can turn this CD into a fundraiser that will help fund some of our mission initiatives. Stay tuned in the months to come for more information about this exciting project!

New: EBPC CONNECT-UP CORNER
“For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.”  Matthew 18:20
Have an idea for getting a small group together?  Want to join one of these start-up groups?  Check out our new “Connect-Up” Board in the Gathering Place.  We are experimenting with creating groups organically based on the common interests of our EBPC Faith Community.   You can initiate and coordinate a group by completing a form and placing it on the board or join an activity or group by adding a post-it-note with your info.
Here are the current categories:
  1. Attend an Event (such as a movie, concert, play or speaker series)
  2. Share a Hobby, Skill or a Craft (ex:  quilting, scrapbooking, play a musical instrument)
  3. Participate in a Community Outreach or Volunteer Activity
  4. Form a Book/Study or Discussion Group
  5. Conversation + (Breakfast, Brunch, Coffee, Lunch, Drinks or Dinner)
  6. Other Interests?  (Have an idea that doesn’t fall into one of these categories?)
Remember, it’s not about the quantity of people, longevity of the group or frequency of gatherings.  Instead, it’s about connecting to each other and our EBPC community, building meaningful relationships and learning, serving and playing together.  If you don’t see something you are interested in, then create it!  Questions?  Contact Liz Beatty (Connections Ministry Coordinator) at aybeatty@comcast.net
