PROJECT "EGG DROP"

(In Chemistry Main Lesson,) the Grade 11 Students had to design an airbag to protect an egg when dropped from the window of the High School. They used a reaction between Acetic acid (vinegar) and Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) to create Carbon Dioxide Gas. Advanced chemistry concepts of Stoichiometry, Avogadro’s Law and the Ideal Gas Law helped them calculate the optimum amount of reactants to fully inflate a baggie.

They managed to successfully inflate the “airbags” during the drop. Unfortunately, the poor eggs suffered due to engineering challenges ensuring the egg was not cracked by the airbag inflation or it stayed cradled within the airbags on impact.
Now here’s a challenge to our future Grade 11s.........!

VWS High School Science and Math Teacher
