Sport, Active Recreation & Healthy Living Plan 2019-26 Update

Thank you to everyone who provided Council with input into the Sport, Active Recreation and Healthy Living (SARHL) Plan 2019-26.  We appreciate you taking the time to complete our Activate and club surveys, and for attending workshops, focus groups and meetings to tell us about your needs and vision for creating a healthy and active Toowoomba Region.

The Activate survey results highlighted your interest in taking more bushwalks and the need for more trails with good signage, that are well promoted.   The survey also told us you’d like to take more walks and bike rides with friends and family around your neighbourhoods and parks, and the need for more connected footpaths with trees for shade.

The full results of the Activate survey and the first draft of the SARHL Plan 2019-26 outlining key actions will be available in August at yoursay.tr.qld.gov.au/SARHL.  We’ll be distributing a special bulletin when the Activate survey results and SARHL Plan’s key actions are published, and will be encouraging everyone to let us know if you think we’re heading in the right direction towards creating healthier, more active communities.

For more information about the SARHL Plan please visit the yoursay.tr.qld.gov.au/SARHL, call Council on 131 872 or email yoursay@tr.qld.gov.au.

The Queensland Government provided $60,000 to Toowoomba Regional Council to develop the Sport, Active Recreation and Healthy Living (SARHL) Plan 2019-26 to enable Queenslanders to participate in sport and recreation activities.

Walks and Trails Updates

The newly completed upgrades of JE Duggan park which includes a sensory natural bushland trail suitable for people of all abilities highlights some of the multiple development opportunities our trails offer to the community and visitors.  The inclusion of braille signage, at grade trail and wayfinding guidance ropes at JE Duggan park will allow people of all abilities to enjoy our bushland parks.  Thanks to Building Our Regions funding the next stage of works will also include a toilet amenity building at JE Duggan park for people with a disability.

The ‘Walks and Trails of Toowoomba Region’ guide booklet was also launched in April to highlight 50 local nature treks for the outdoor enthusiasts. The walks and trails included in the guide booklet are graded for all fitness levels with options for the novice trekker through to the experienced outdoor enthusiasts.

Earlier this year, nearly 1000 people actively participated in the the Activate Survey as part of the consultation of the Sport, Active Recreation and Healthy Living Plan 2019-2026. A key finding from the survey identified walking as one of the most popular activities across all genders and age groups, including in parks and nature. The survey’s finding of the popularity of walking backs up Council’s decision last year to join a network of more than 500 Councils worldwide in signing the ‘Walk21’ International Charter on Walking.

For more information about our Walks and Trails please visit our Walks and Trails webpage.

Wyreema Park tennis courts

Some recent updates have been made to the Wyreema Park tennis courts. The public can access the tennis courts at any time for free, however, the use of the court lighting attracts a small fee. Two $2 coins will provide one hour play time, while three $2 coins will allow for one and a half hours under lights. The coin switch is located in the power box.

Good Sports

How does your club manage alcohol?

Good Sports is here to help with putting in place great strategies to minimise alcohol-related harm in community sporting clubs.

Dedicated Community Development Officers are available to assist clubs with implementing an Alcohol Management Policy that aims to set clear expectations within the club environment around alcohol consumption. Good Sports also provides clubs with free physical resources that support the implementation of the Alcohol Management Policy such as relevant QLD liquor license signage.

Did you know that over 70 clubs in Toowoomba are Good Sports Clubs? Is your club a Good Sports Club?

For more information on how to become a Good Sports Club, please visit their website.

National Guidelines for the inclusion of transgender and gender diverse people in sport

The Guidelines, launched in May 2019, were developed by the Australian Human Rights Commission in partnership with Sport Australia and the Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports (COMPPS). This is a great start to support inclusion however it needs to be implemented at the ground level by all sporting organisations and volunteers to bring them to life and embrace and promote the importance of diversity and inclusion so that sport better represents individuals, communities and Australia as a whole.

For more information or information or to download a copy of the guidelines, please click here.

Sport and Park Bookings

All users of Council’s sporting facilities and park activities across the Toowoomba Region are required to hold a current booking with Parks and Recreation Services. Please note that  changes have made to the booking forms process, in regard to nominating specific locations.

This accurate information will allow Council to plan for better facilities into the future, and helps provide evidence when requesting future facility upgrades or maintenance including opportunities that arise through grants. All users are also reminded to keep the facilities clean.

All bookings must be directed to Council’s park bookings team at parkbookings@tr.qld.gov.au.

For more information about booking a sports field or fitness in a park, please visit our Council bookings webpage or contact 131 872.
