SPOTLIGHT
Bethany Edmunds, YWCA Women of Distinction Awardee

SCWIST member Bethany Edmunds was honoured with the 2019 YWCA Women of Distinction Award in the education, training and development category during ceremonies on May 13. She was cited for her visionary approach to tech and teaching, as the first woman Associate Dean of Computing at BCIT where she had a significant role in the development of ground-breaking classroom designs and setting the standard for new best practices in computing education in British Columbia. Bethany has also previously been named in 2018 as one of BC Business most influential women in STEM and chosen as  Business in Vancouver's top Forty under 40. Bethany is currently the Associate Dean & Vancouver Lead Computer Science Faculty of Northeastern University.

The YWCA Women of Distinction Awards honours individuals and organizations whose outstanding activities and achievements contribute to the well-being and future of their community. 

Building confidence in a new experience:
Janice Bailey, scientific director

"I’ve had a huge battle with imposter syndrome throughout my career. Absolutely huge,” she said. As a result of her battle, she didn’t apply for either the research associate dean or the scientific director position. Instead, she was approached by the university and FRQNT to consider each position. What helped her build her confidence was having people encourage her to give the positions a shot and finding resulting success. She’s even had her peers at Université Laval approach her during a celebration for her new job as scientific director to say they find her inspiring. Read more.

Catherine Burns’ Innovative Contributions
to the Advancement of Systems Design Engineering

Dr. Catherine Burns is a professor of Systems Design Engineering and Executive Director of the Centre for Bioengineering and Biotechnology at the University of Waterloo. She does remarkable research as a principal investigator, which has applications in many diverse sectors, including healthcare, the military, power plant management, and oil and gas refining. Dr. Catherine Burns has evidently made her mark in the field of Engineering and is currently making exceptional contributions to society as a result. With over 100 research publications and co-authorship on a book regarding Ecological Interface Design, it is no doubt that her contributions will help advance Systems Design Engineering in ways that have never been done before. Read more.

Flexible schedule for mothers working in STEM fields
– Friend or Foe?

In the STEM field, there are still strong cultural expectations of intensive hours and that the scientific experiment matters more than anything else, including family. Although there is a drive to get more young girls and women interested in STEM careers, we also must get rid of stigmas around work flexibility and cultural beliefs in the STEM fields, to allow women to choose a STEM career. EVENT RECAP
SCWIST Communications Writing Workshop
SCWIST communications team intern and UBC journalism graduate student Alison Knill, together with colleague Abi Hayward, led a writing workshop on May 18, 2019. They were joined via Skype by their supervisor, Kathryn Gretsinger.

The workshop is part of the communications committee's professional development program to build team capacity, recruit & retain volunteers, and support & sustain leadership succession.

SCWIST Women in STEM Job Fair
Close to 200 participated in SCWIST's first "Women in STEM" job fair on May 23, 2019 at the Vancouver Public Library central branch. The event included workshops, panel discussions, resume reviews and a networking reception.

Employers and community partners on-site were: Stemcell Technologies, D-Wave Systems, ALS Canada Ltd, City of Vancouver, Hemmera, Clir Renewables, Semios, AbCelleraIntegral Group, Fi.Span, Avanade, New Ventures BC, Vancouver Public Library, English Pronunciation for Success, and the Immigrant Services Society of British Columbia.   

Meeting success with the event, SCWIST plans to implement the job fair as a continuing annual event.
