Roadrunner Speaks Vol 6.5

Well, hello June! That moment when you realize that SunBurn is just one month away and the all the art projects and preparation are ramping up. DON'T PANIC! Ok, panic a little...

The sun burns in 30 days!

We're super stoked to announce our logo contest winner!

Our main motivation for the logo contest was to move away from using the Zia symbol, which the people of the Zia Pueblo hold sacred and have requested that permission be given before the Zia is used by organizations.

We had several great submissions, some of which may see life in other uses, but the submission that received the most votes is at the top of this email. From the artist, Napkin Math from Mimbres, NM:

“I walked by a short agave cactus one morning and felt inspired, imagining that I was the sun beating down on it. This led me to create a simple mandala with the agave leaves. For the center motif, I wanted to do something using negative space that would allow for a stencil-friendly image that wasn’t as simple as plopping the man in the middle of something. I also felt strongly that this symbol should be simple enough to allow the rest of the community to remix and repurpose it without difficulty. I hope everyone who sees it can spend a few moments pretending to be the New Mexican Sun and reflect on how they shine on their world.”

May Church Night - with Tacos!

Our next/last Church night & pre-burn art build day before SunBurn will be June 8th at LivLab Studios, 420 Haines Ave. NW in ABQ.  LivLab will be open in the afternoon prior to church to anyone who needs assistance, or tools, or space to finish their art project.  We will also be working on a few SunBurn-specific art projects if you just want to participate in art.  Pre-Burn Art Build opens at 2pm, Church night runs 6pm-midnight.  Taco Potluck!  BYOB.  Come hang out with New Mexico Burners.
Sunburn Art Honoraria

We are excited to announce the art installations selected for SunBurn Art Grants. Every selected artist or team submitted an idea, coupled with a proposal and a few forms, to the SunBurn Art Department to get a little push in getting their project off the ground and at SunBurn. We are happy to say that almost every submission was accepted and supported in some manner. It is important to state that we celebrate ALL artists, we fund some artists and support the art which we feel best reflects the art experience we want for SunBurn. Thank you everyone who submitted art grant applications. It’s thrilling to see the artistry flow within our community, and Parallax will definitely be a reflection of that!

Wait...is SunBurn sold out??
Yes, open sale tickets are sold out.  Keep an eye out on our Facebook pages and groups for anyone needing to sell theirs. You can also e-mail ticketing@nmsunburn.com if you have a ticket to sell or are looking for a ticket and SunBurn ticketing will do their best to do some matchmaking. Note that you must allow time for a ticket transfer to take place, which will end on July 1, and not a moment later.

For those lucky enough to have a ticket, make double sure you read the Fine Print before you purchase: http://nmsunburn.com/info/

Vehicle camping passes remain suspended due to space constraints until we have placed major art and theme camps. Parking passes for vehicles that will live in the parking lot are still available. If your vehicle will live within the footprint of a REGISTERED THEME CAMP, contact your camp lead to ask about obtaining a code to purchase a Theme Camp Vehicle Pass. If you absolutely must have your vehicle with you and are not with a theme camp, please e-mail ticketing at ticketing@nmsunburn.com and explain your circumstances. We can discuss how best to accommodate you.
Some before and after from the first work weekend. The remnants here were used to reface the adjacent corral.  Thank you to everyone who came out and busted ass to get so much done last weekend on site.
As you can see above, there was a huge amount of work done to clear the fallen building in the center of town.  We also fixed the roof on the feed barn, the ramp up to the train depot, and cleared a *ton* of other debris.
We will need volunteers for the June 15-16 work weekend!

We'll be looking for people to come out and help at the June work weekend any day now.  Theme camps will be encouraged to come check out their sites and also help with some of the work that will need to be done.  For now, if you are interested, please email sunburn@nmsunburn.com

For liability reasons, we need to be able to account for everyone present to work on the volunteer database like last time.  Please do not plan to just show up.  It will be hot, so the earlier we can get started, the better.  The goal would be to arrive between 8-8:30am, have a quick touch-base meeting 8:30-9:00am, start work at 9:00am, and work until 6:00pm (or sooner).

It is crucial that anyone who comes to a work weekend is prepared to, well, work.  The site is in no way conducive to open-toed shoes, so please plan accordingly; boots or steel-toes are preferable over sneakers.  Gloves, safety goggles, and sunscreen will be essential; hard hats will be helpful if you have one.  Tools and equipment will be provided, but if you have any you're willing to bring, please do! There will be shade but you'll need to bring your own water, hat, whatever you need to work outside in the sun, along with whatever you need for an overnight campout if you're planning on staying overnight.
Are you interested in performing, teaching or hosting a workshop at SunBurn? Our Scheduler would love to hear from you and help co-ordinate performance times and spaces. You can contact Julian at scheduling@nmsunburn.com
Sunbunnies! Awkward Fox, an award-winning bodypainter, needs more painters and performers for the opening ceremony of the Naked Olympics, one of our SunBurn Art Grant projects!

You will learn the art of bodypainting on Sunday June 30th at LivLab before the burn and create a masterpiece on Saturday of the burn! You must be available all day of both days to participate. No prior experience in paint or performance necessary, but you must have a ticket to SunBurn already.

Please email Ariana for more info!!
A reminder to ALL volunteers that some shift times and duties may change in the run up to the event. Be sure to check in from time to time and especially before the packing rush to confirm your scheduled times. Also, please take a minute to ensure your contact details and camp name are correct in your profile. To check: click your name button at the upper right of the volunteer database main screen.

THANK YOU FOR VOLUNTEERING!!!
