Classroom News

Sixth Grade
On Thursday, June 6th sixth graders will be going on a field trip to Cornell University. They will be visiting the math, food science, and space sciences departments and the botanical gardens. Students will get the opportunity to meet with graduate students to learn about what they study and what path led them to Cornell and their area of study. The trip will involve a lot of walking, so please make sure students have appropriate footwear and a water bottle. Students will also have the option of purchasing ice cream at the Cornell Dairy bar. We are limiting the amount to a dish or cone (no more than $5).

Seventh Grade
Seventh grade students will be on a field trip to Taughannock Park on Monday, June 24th. We will be doing outdoor activities such as a stream survey, floating classroom, and a walk. Please make sure your student comes prepared for the weather and has appropriate footwear so that he or she can enjoy all of the activities the day has to offer. Students should pack a lunch or if they choose to buy lunch, they can turn in the form that was handed out at the end of May.

Eighth Grade
The 8th grade NYS Science Written Assessment will be held on Monday, June 3rd.  Please be sure your child has plenty of rest and a healthy breakfast. The exam will start at approximately 8:05am.

There will be a NYS ELA Field Test scheduled for 8th grades students on Wednesday, June 5th.  The purpose of the field test is to ensure the validity and reliability of the NYS Testing Program.  This field test will take no longer than 40 minutes.

Music

The spring concert season closed on Tuesday evening with an outstanding performance by the 7th and 8th grade band and chorus. We wish to extend our heartfelt congratulations to all performers and our sincere thanks to all families and friends for your unceasing support of our students and program! This link will allow you to enjoy a wonderful video recording of our concert courtesy of Scott and Amy Dawson. We extend a very special thank you to the Dawsons for continuing to provide our community with high quality recordings of our performances! Please feel free to share this link with any family or friends who were unable to be with us on Tuesday evening.

Attention all 8th grade band students!!! You are invited to perform with the HS band at graduation on June 27th at 6:30PM at the HS football stadium. I will be emailing an information sheet to all 8th grade students and families and will have hard copies available in the band room. Please consider participating in this important community event while enjoying the opportunity to perform with our stellar HS band! See Mr. Burgess or Mrs. Lewis if you have any questions. Opportunities for lessons on the graduation music will be available for any student participating.

Community Service Day

We’re pleased to share with you that middle school students will be participating in a community-wide day of service during the morning of June 7, 2019.  In previous years, we have sponsored a community read for students where everyone in the building reads the same book and participates in activities related to that book.  This year, we have planned a morning where every single student will be engaged in some kind of community service activity.

For example:

  • A group of students will be traveling to Juniper Manor to play music and socialize with the residents.

  • Other student volunteers will be making dog and cat toys to donate to the SPCA.

  • We have partnered with Takin’ Care of T-Burg, as well as the Ulysses Philomathic Library and a few local churches, to do cleaning and beautification projects in the village.

  • Another group of students will be focused on cleaning and beautification of the school campus.

  • Some middle schoolers will be making and delivering snacks for other volunteers

  • Others will be reading to elementary school students and spreading positivity with chalk affirmations.

Please remind your student to wear comfortable work clothes/shoes on Friday, as many of our service events take place outside and may involve getting slightly grubby. If there is inclement weather, this event will be rescheduled as many of the projects will take place outside. The rain date is June 13, 2019.

We are also looking for supplies for some of our activities. We would love donations of colored sidewalk chalk, gardening gloves (small & medium sizes), and rags. If you are willing to loan us rakes and shovels, please mark them with your name so we can return them to you. Your student can bring donations to Ms. Brisson in the MS library.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact Jenna Stearns at JStearns@tburg.k12.ny.us.
