SCULLING

Masters rowers Darby and Cai (in the photos above and below) love to scull and highly recommend trying it if you haven't already. Enjoy time on the river, stay fit and join the diverse and welcoming community of scullers at Holyoke Rows.
🚣‍♀️🚣‍♀️
Never sculled before? Check out our beginners' sculling classes offered both in the morning and evenings from June 17 - July 5. You can drop in any time, for one class or more.

Visit holyokerows.org for more information.

LOOKING FOR SUMMER FUN FOR KIDS?
This may be just the thing-- Holyoke Rows offers summer kids programs including kayaking  for ages 7 and up and rowing for kids ages 10 and up. Available throughout July and August, the half-day programs cost $75 a week and include lunch. On Fridays, the kayakers paddle to a destination and roast hot dogs and marshmallows over a campfire! WHO'S WHO AT HOLYOKE ROWS
Q & A with Kevin Lonergan and Jim Brooks

Q: How did you first start rowing together?
Kevin: Stephanie Moore asked if I would be interested in rowing with Jim. The Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) was offering an inclusive race and Jim needed a partner. We decided to give it a try and it seems to have worked out well. Even after Jim was offered an Olympic rower as a partner for the HOCR, he stayed with me as a partner. Not sure if he made the right choice but I am glad he did.

Q:. How long have you been rowing together?
Jim: This will be our fifth season rowing together.

Q: What kind of boat do you use?
Kevin: We row in a double. Jim's seat is fixed and my seat slides. We also use pontoons for increased stability.
Jim: I am in the stern and Kevin is in the bow. Kevin determines the stroke rate and steers the boat.

Q: What are you proud of in rowing?
Kevin:
I enjoyed winning the inclusive race at the Riverfront Recapture race last year. We steered a good course and held off a few competitors. When the two oldest people in the race are usually in our boat, it feels good to beat the others.
Jim: It's not the 25 medals I have won alone and with partners in nine years, it's the people that have helped me forget the difficulty of living with MS each and every time I come down to the water to row!

Q: What has been the best part about rowing together?
Jim:
Kevin is such an easy person to talk to. He keeps me aware of my often too serious nature! It only takes a couple rows together before we are performing at our best out on the water.

Kevin: The best part of rowing together is getting out on the water with a friend. You are floating on a river that passes through some great landscape. Life is always better on the water.

Do you know what this new dragon boat cover is recycled from?

a) a roof tarp
b) a billboard
c) a Navy event tent

If you said b, you are right!  It was donated by Pat Keough of Lamar.

THE BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP AT HOLYOKE ROWS

If you've been paying season by season, program by program, you're missing the boat (LOL). A membership offers you more and may save you money.

As a member, you are entitled to:
1. Discounts on programs and classes, (sweep rowing, kayaking, sculling, etc.),
2. Use of the equipment including club boats, SUPs and life vests whenever you like and if you are qualified. If you have your own boat, there may be space to store it in the boathouse.
3. Use of the shower facilities.

Rowing memberships are $300 per year for an individual and $375 per year for a family, (each also has a work option for discounted dues).
Kayaking memberships are $90 per year with two hours work.
All memberships for veterans are free.

For more information, check out www.holyokerows.org or contact Stephanie Moore at office@holyokerows.org. Once you join, you'll receive an orientation and a key fob (sorry, cute little blue boat key rings not included).

Are your friends surprised when you tell them you row? Maybe they need proof? For some of us, rowing may be the last thing friends and family ever imagined we'd do. That's exactly why Amy D. somewhat gleefully had this photo taken to show her skeptics she wasn't messing around. "If I don't show them a photo, they won't believe it," she laughed.
Take that, doubters!
