JBHS SIKORSKY STEM CHALLENGE TEAM PLACES 2ND

Congratulations to the students from the Joel Barlow Sikorsky STEM challenge for their outstanding presentation and skills on Friday, May 31, at EXPO FEST, at the Toyota Oakdale Theater in Wallingford, CT.  Their final presentation brought them outstanding performance and design comments from the judges who are experts in their field for Sikorsky helicopter design and presentation skills.  They were specifically complimented on the teams innovative and creative design as well as a simulated in-flight demonstration.
The other two finalist included first place Lauralton Hall and third place Hamden High School.  This is the third year in a row that Barlow has been one of the three finalist and the second time they have taken second.  They were the defending champions from the 2017-18 challenge.
The Sikorsky STEM Challenge for 2018-19:
The challenge presented to this year was to design a Cockpit of the future that will be representative of what a pilot would fly in a simulator. The pilot will have control of the roll, pitch and yaw control surfaces while your flight control computer will read in these values. The cockpit should adhere to all FAA regulations for cockpit design, as well as human factors for the difference in pilots flying your simulator. Design a cockpit that actuates the roll, pitch and yaw control surfaces of the Sx-18 Helicopter.
Presenting Team Members: Liam Prevelige, Zac Shortt, Christine Tong, Meghan Ogrinz, Maddie McHale,
Demonstration Flyers:  Liam Prevelige

THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION: PREPARING STUDENTS FOR 2030
Thursday, June 6th
7:30 - 8:30 PM

Our school system is doing a fabulous job preparing kids for the economy of the 1980s. Let’s think about the fantastic future of the working world of 2030 through 2050. What are the experiences, learning environments, skills, knowledge sets, and other aspects of education that we should let go of because they are antiquated? What is excellent about our current program that we should maintain? What are we not thinking about nor introducing because our current structures are holding us back? Tom McMorran, Superintendent of Redding, Easton and Region 9 school districts, wants to share some thoughts about the future of our culture, our economy, the real-world in an era of Internet access, and how to help our children prepare themselves to spend their adult lives doing things they find rewarding and that bring value to others.

THE ALLEN AND HELEN HERMES ARTS SERIES PRESENTS: NEWBERRY AND COMPTON
Thursday, June 20th
7:30 - 8:30 PM

The Allen and Helen Hermes Arts Series is proud to present Compton & Newberry.   Spend the evening with this talented duo as they lend their special flair to a beloved tradition known as brother duet music, a form of country music that originated in the ‘30s and ‘40s and eventually transitioned into what is now known as bluegrass.
Mike Compton and Joe Newberry are well known to the regular listeners of A Prairie Home Companion and the devoted fans of the Grammy Awarding winning O Brother, Where Art Thou and Cold Mountain soundtracks.  As virtuosos of old-time mandolin, banjo and guitar, they dig deep into early country music and blues.  The audience can expect to hear their favorite tunes along with traditional instrumentals, ballads and award-winning originals.

Houlahan will use a multimedia presentation including dramatic audio of the actual police radio traffic and interrogation of the captured bank robbers, photographs, and maps to bring the Norco Bank Robbery to life.
