Why Should Caregivers Go To A Support Group?

Hi, again, clients, partners, collaborators, and friends! Welcome to my June blog.

Thirteen years ago, I started attending a support group soon after Katrina destroyed my mom’s home and exacerbated her oncoming dementia symptoms. I got the support, suggestions, and relief from stress I needed to care for mom...and for myself! If I hadn’t, I shudder to think how I would have endured that 10-year journey while I worked full-time with a daily commute and statewide travel. I may not be doing what I do now.

Today, along with my individual caregiving support consulting, it’s gratifying to help other family caregivers on their own journey with dementia by facilitating two groups, subbing at others, and leading a memory café. I am proud and passionate about supporting family caregivers whose loved ones are living with dementia. The comfort, empathy, and helpful advice are invaluable. Attendees say regularly that they learn something, and feel better and less stressed, every time.

If you are caring for someone living with dementia, or know someone who is, please forward this to them. In a safe, confidential setting, they will feel less isolated and stressed. My Alzheimer’s Association group meets on the 4th Tuesday each month at 7 PM at the Tigard Senior Center on SW Omara. My HOPE group meets every Saturday at 11 AM at the Community at Marquis in Tualatin.

Or, look up other support groups in your area. You won’t regret it.

Thanks again for your time and for being a part of my “virtual” support group. Please feel free to comment, ask questions, make suggestions, or even unsubscribe at any time!

Caring Regards,
Bill Cohen
