(New York, NY) American Dance Abroad (ADA) is pleased to announce recent grants from the Howard Gilman Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in support of ADA’s ongoing mission to expand visibility for U.S. dance internationally. This is ADA’s inaugural grant from the Gilman Foundation and its second grant from the Mellon Foundation.
The Gilman Foundation’s support in the amount of $25,000 is designated for NYC-based organizations and artists across a selection of ADA programs that will showcase and promote their work internationally and provide critical professional development and travel support. Anna Campbell, Senior Program Officer for the Howard Gilman Foundation, describes the importance of supporting ADA’s endeavors: “American Dance Abroad’s unique and specific attention to a significant issue in the dance field—decreasing touring opportunities, especially internationally—has made it a linchpin in the effort to enhance artistic careers and support shifting business models in today’s dynamic marketplace… the Foundation is thrilled to partner with American Dance Abroad to offer its services to New York City’s extraordinary dance artists.”
The Mellon Foundation has granted ADA $100,000 to conduct American Dance Recon in U.S. cities, as well as for general operations. American Dance Recon is a program that immerses international dance programmers in strong U.S. dance communities and guides the participants in contextualizing the work they experience, the goal of which is greater understanding and appreciation of U.S. dance, and ultimately more opportunities and engagements for American artists overseas. Mellon’s 2016-2019 grant enabled ADA to expand the program, traditionally held in NYC, to additional communities – most recently, to Los Angeles, CA, Portland, OR, and Seattle, WA. The American Dance Recon program has been resoundingly successful in creating opportunities for its participants, such as performance invitations for U.S. artists from international festivals, ongoing collaborations between artists and programmers, and a strong network of international programmer “alumni” who work together to bring U.S. artists for multi-site engagements.
American Dance Abroad looks forward to providing the continued support to U.S. artists that the Gilman and Mellon grants allow.

Sziget Festival was established in 1993 as one of the large-scale cultural festivals in Central Europe. The festival takes place in a green park on an island on the River Danube running through Budapest. In the last 27 years the festival has gone through a major evolution – some venues disappeared, new ones emerged – however, the Dance and Theatre Venue has always been one of the main venues on the island. I have been involved with the preparation and management of the venue for 16 years now. I took the position of the venue manager and co-programmer six years ago.
