Welp City News! Issue 19

Welcome to the newest issue of Welp City News! For those of you just joining us, this is the go-to newsletter for all the latest and greatest Hooten Hallers updates, exclusive photos and drawings, and a special Hooten Hallers created recipe!

First, The News:

Phew, we just made it back from quite a tour!  We had a fantastic time with the fabulous Reverend Horton Heat, Bloodshot Bill, and our new friends The Delta Bombers!  The tour gods demanded a lot sacrifices, and we hope they are appeased for a while.  The first to go was the air conditioning, followed by a guitar stand, and then our transmission died without warning.  However, the mechanics got to work right away and got us back on the road and we didn't miss a single show!

We're gearing up for lots more road dates, but first we're enjoying some hot and humid Missouri summertime!  We're headlining the St Louis Americana Festival Sat July 6 and we're spending some time in the studio working on our next album.
We are thrilled to announce that we're coming back to the UK this November!  Tour dates are listed below, with most ticket sales beginning on Monday July 8. Thanks to Henry at Midnight Mango for putting this tour together for us.
Ahead of our upcoming dates supporting The Dead South in Dallas and Tulsa later this month, we got a chance to have a chat with vocalist and guitar slinger Nate Hilts.  We could go on and on about how genuine, fun, hardworking, and thoughtful Nate is, but let's just let the man himself do the talking.

THH: What sort of cryptids do you have in Canada?

Nate: We actually have quite a few cryptids. I will name a few I find to be quite interesting: Ogopogo, Weesageechak, Waheela, Bigfoot (Humanoid), Loup Garou, and Thunderbird.

THH: We took an informal poll in the van about the most likely causes of your broken arm.  We guessed the following possibilities:
Kellie: skateboarding
Andy: arm wrestling Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
John: rock climbing
Jake: fell in the shower
other (please specify):

Nate: I broke my hand punching a polar bear right in the kisser.

THH: What brings out your inner nerd?

Nate: I love Star Trek, especially the original and the Next Generation. Speaking of skateboarding, I actually have one handmade for me that has the Enterprise painted on it.

THH: The world thinks of hockey, maple, poutine, accessible healthcare, “sorry”, “eh”, and legal weed. When you dig a little deeper, what’s at the heart of true Canadian-ness?

Nate: Really terrible drivers.  We have too much space, so no one knows how to drive properly.  That and a lot of beer.

THH: Having been on the road for four years, you’ve certainly seen some crazy stuff.  Does anything stick out in your mind that you’d like to share?

Nate: Some pretty rank accidents, that’s for sure.  One of the coolest and craziest things we’ve seen was that huge sandstorm in Arizona that we drove through when we were on the road with you guys [March 2018]. That is definitely something that us prairie folk are not used to seeing. It reminded me of a herd of horses running through a valley kicking up enough dirt to create a sandstorm.

THH: You’re a busy guy: you’ve got multiple bands, new records coming out, a record label to run.  What’s on the docket for the rest of this year and into next year?

Nate: The Dead South has new album, Sugar and Joy, coming out in October. Other than that, I’m focusing on healing up my hand, we’re putting out a few more music videos, and lots of cool stuff coming up that we can't wait to be able to announce.

THH: Hockey or curling?

Nate: Curling.  Hockey’s great but curling is one that you can play with all your friends and hopefully no one gets hurt.

THH: Nearly everyone has seen your viral music video “In Hell I’ll Be In Good Company”,which leads us to the conclusion that perhaps you have cracked the mysterious code of the internet.  What will you do with your internet super powers?

Nate: Right when you think you have cracked it, you realize you have no idea what is going on with it or what you did to get there in the first place.  With our super powers, we’re going to release a secret formula that will break and destroy the internet but we can’t say exactly when that will happen.

THH: Is it true what they say about men with wide brimmed hats?

Nate: Absolutely.

THH: A lot of your songs tell the stories about specific people. Do you often write them based on characters that exist in your own mind, or do you take inspiration from people you know or read about?

Nate: A lot come from characters in my own mind, like 90%. But a few have come from inspiration from real life, books, or movies I’ve seen.

THH: If every man needs a chew, what brand?

Nate: Oh you know, at the time I would have said Copenhagen.  But nowadays, it’s Big League Chew.

THH: What question do you have about life as a Hooten Haller?

Nate: How many floors have you guys slept on?

THH: Phew, that's tough to answer, and there's been so many memorable floors... but it's got to be around 420.

Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us, Nate!  Hope your hand heals quickly and we'll see ya in a few weeks!

Kellie's Jalapeño Pineapple Upside-Down Cake

I love the flavor combination of pineapple and jalapeño, so I decided to try it on the ubiquitous Pineapple Upside-Down Cake.  I used both fresh and candied jalapeños, but I imagine this would work with pickled jalapeños as well.

For the topping:
20 oz can of unsweetened pineapple rings (approx 9 rings)
3 TBSP butter
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
approx 20 candied jalapeño slices

 For the cake:
2 large eggs, beaten
1/3 cup buttermilk
1/3 cup pineapple juice (reserved from can)
5 TBSP butter, melted
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 fresh jalapeño, seeded and minced

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees fahrenheit.
2. In a 9" cast iron skillet or a 9" baking pan, melt 3 TBSP butter and spread around the pan.
3. Sprinkle brown sugar over the butter, and then arrange the pineapple rings, starting with one in the middle.  Fill in the spaces with candied jalapeños.
4.  In a bowl, mix eggs, buttermilk, pineapple juice, melted butter, and vanilla.
5.  In a separate bowl, combine dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt.
6.  Add the dry ingredients into the the wet ingredients and stir in minced jalapeño.
7. Spread batter evenly over pineapple rings in the pan.
8. Bake for approx 35-40 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean.
9.  Let cool for 5 minutes.  Using oven mitts, invert a plate or platter over the skillet, and then flip the cake over.  If any of the toppings are askew, just use a fork and push them back into place.  Enjoy!
