Quarterly Round-Up

Your quarterly recap from the DYW West team.
Choose Your Career

Between January 22nd and February 6th, DYW West & West College Scotland hosted 3 Choose Your Career events at Paisley Lagoon, Clydebank Town Hall and Greenock Town Hall where school pupils would be able to learn more about the various different courses on offer to them at West College Scotland. Different activities were set up to make for a more interactive experience including fitness competitions, a build a birdhouse competition and make-up demonstrations.

 

Sport & Fitness Careers Fair 2019

February 20th saw the 2019 Sport & Fitness Careers Fair at Renfrew Leisure Centre. Employers from Rangers FC, Kilmarnock FC, Glasgow Clan, React Basketball, Glasgow City FC, Challenger Sports, SFA, Energie Fitness, Street League, Renfrew Leisure, Enable Scotland and The Fitness Group as well as West College Scotland were there to talk to pupils about what it’s like to work in the Sports and Fitness industry as well as studying at West College Scotland to learn about physical fitness and sports. There were challenges and activities for all to participate in such as the keepy-ups, shot power, basketball shooting and hockey shooting challenges. Careers Days
Since the turn of the year DYW West have attended and organised a lot of careers days for school pupils and college students. From Choose Your Career and the Inverclyde Apprenticeship Careers Fair to school-specific careers events! In the last year the DYW West team have attended around 20 career days at different schools over the 4 local authorities and have reached approximately 4,000 pupils to try and help them get a better of idea of their futures.
 
Girls With Skills

On the 19th and 20th of March, DYW West in partnership with GTG & Arnold Clark organised for groups of young women to experience the inner workings of GTG Glasgow. They were put through their paces and their efforts paid off as some of them gained work experience placements with Vauxhall, Volkswagen & Ford!

Greenpower
This year’s Greenpower teams have seen great success since they started the course back in October 2018. Since then, the teams have been working incredibly hard to get their F24 karts ready for their first race at East Fortune on the 29th of March. The Rafferty Racing team were so professional on the day that they were rewarded with Best Presented team, as well as this Inver Racers who won the race on the day for the F24 class, which qualified them for the international final at Silverstone, the team need to raise £2000 in order to compete, click here for a link to their Just Giving page. The team’s efforts on the day had clearly caught the eye as there were several write-ups in local publications singing their praises. International Women's Day 2019
For IWD 2019, DYW West took groups of young people from different schools on various tours of some of the country’s biggest employers including NHS Inverclyde & Renfrew, Rolls Royce & British Airways. This gave the groups a valuable insight in to the role apprentices play at these companies. See our Instagram highlights for photos from the tours!
Incredible Innovations 2019
Our first ever Incredible Innovations final took place on March 26th this year. All teams put a lot of effort and were rewarded by making it to the finals of the competition. The local press have written articles about the winners and runners-up of the competition, click the links below to read more about their ideas!
Hire Me Workshops
February 26th and March 28th marked the first and second 'Hire Me' workshops organised by DYW West and Renfrewshire Council.  Senior phase pupils attended 3 different workshops focusing on CVs, interviews and application forms to help them apply for jobs in the future. A 4th session involved a tour of West College Scotland Paisley campus.
City Gate
City Gate Construction Manager, Andy Watson, returned to his old school on the 24th of April to lead 2 days of instruction about joinery at Glennifer High School as part of CGC’s Community Benefits commitment to Renfrewshire Council. Young Enterprise Area Finals
Mearns Castle High School came out on top at the recent Young Enterprise Company Programme Area Finals 2019. Held at the Normandy Hotel in March, school teams from Renfrewshire, East Ren and Inverclyde have taken their product ideas to market since August 2018 learning real tangible business skills such as planning, marketing, finance, working as a team, working to deadlines and customer service. Scottish Apprenticeship Week
Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2019 was another successful week for us in the calendar, The Inverclyde Apprenticeship Careers Fair returned as well as Scotland's Biggest Parents Evening. The Inverclyde Appreticeship Careers Fair was supported by many employers including BBC Scotland, NHS, Rolls-Royce, JP Morgan, and Ferguson Marine. Young people got the chance to speak to employers about apprenticeship opportunities and their importance to Inverclyde's future workforce. DYW West took part in Scotland's Biggest Parent's Evening - engaging with parents and staff (that are parents) about apprenticeships. We ran events at Rolls Royce and supported two NHS events on the day.
Malcolm's School Educator Event
The Malcolm's School Educator Event was a chance for school teachers and Skills Development Scotland staff based in the West of Scotland to get a tour of Malcolm's working environment and learn about the opportunities on offer to young people and the skills and qualities they look for when hiring new staff.

DYW West are delighted to introduce our newest team member, Jan McMahon! Jan is our Programme Executive for West Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire, Welcome Jan!
