£200-off! IVDD Screening Subsidy Special Offer

Thanks to some amazing fundraising we are able to offer, on a first come, first served basis, a £200 subsidy during the month of June for owners wishing to screen their Dachshunds for IVDD. That means, if you use one of our CVS partner clinics it will ONLY COST YOU £100. If you use your own vet, you can still claim the subsidy.

Please email info@dachshund-ivdd.uk to book one of the subsidised places. One dog per owner. Dachshunds must be between 24 and 48 months when screened and subsidies are only available for dogs and bitches that will be bred from. If your Dachshund has already been bred from and will be again, it is still eligible to participate.

Bella's Snazzy Fundraiser supports IVDD Screening

Following the very sad loss of Bella, the beautiful 5-year old Red Standard Dachshund belonging to Julie Austin, Chris Lamb wanted to try to raise awareness and money for future generations of the breed.

Chris says:

“Julie has been an inspiration to many, as through social media she has shared Bella’s incredibly brave journey through two surgeries for IVDD. I make hand-crochet Dachshund jumpers and have almost 3k followers on both Facebook and Instagram and decided to offer some of my products as prizes in return for £2 per number. The many Dachshund groups on Facebook were kind enough to allow me to share, which enabled me to reach a very large number of owners. I added a link to the Dachshund Breed Council website to try and direct people there too. I have also now got a page on my own website again with links to the Breed Council and IVDD Information. I feel it’s important to stress that while it’s lovely for some people to dress up their dogs, health is paramount and thought Snazzy Sausage Dog Jumpers was a good platform”.

Thanks to Chris and everyone who supported her to raise over £1000 to support our IVDD Screening Programme.

Chris’s Snazzy Sausage website is here: www.snazzysausagedogjumpers.co.ukand you can find her on Facebook.

New Dachshund Dog Advice Video

6 years ago, at Crufts 2013, we were asked to help with the production of a breed advice video. The project turned out not to be economically viable for the producers but they have recently edited the footage and made it available on their YouTube Channel. We are grateful to Chris Wise of Mandrill Media for the link:

Mini Wire Lafora Screening Results

The Lafora Screening results from the Spring 2019 KC Breed Records Supplement show:

  • 37 litters producing 138 puppies in total

  • 19 litters producing 69 puppies from both tested clear parents

  • 17 litters producing 65 puppies where one or other parent was clear

  • 1 litter producing 4 puppies where neither parent was tested for Lafora and the sire is also a PRA carrier

Here is the updated trend graph:

The Dachshund Club Handbook and Records

Dachshund Club Chairman John Bennett writes:

I just thought that I would inform everyone who, a few years ago, expressed their wish for the Dachshund Club’s Handbook to continue that the closing date for this forthcoming Handbook is in 6 months time!

I realise that is quite a way off and there are still plenty of shows during the summer for your wins to be included in the advert or Champions' Gallery. However, at the moment we have received 3 Gallery of Champion photographs with their information, and also 2 Exhibitor's Adverts, which is far from sufficient, to enable the Handbook to continue.

There have, in the past 2 years, been many Champions made up in the 6 varieties with no reason for those not to be already sent in. Also, your advert page can be ordered and paid for, but your advert sent nearer the closing date to give the Dachshund Club an indication of how many wish to go ahead with the Handbook publishing.

New technology has been put in place to give a better reproduction for your advert and photographs, with the Gallery being in colour for the first time.
Since our show in November, many exhibitors have received personal letters inviting them to advertise and a form especially aimed at qualifiers to go into the Gallery. It has been advertised on Facebook, the Dachshund Club web page, in Breed notes and at BOTH our shows and at many more, with leaflets being distributed at various breed shows around the country. We attend as many of the Championship Shows as possible, so if you cannot download an Advert form, please ask us for one, or bring your information with you. Payment can be made by cheque/Paypal or direct to the Dachshund Club Treasurer, Lynn Black.

There has been a lot of work by all the Editors already, preparing and checking prospective things for the book. If it is your wish that the book is to continue, it would be appreciated if you found the time to respond to this request. Failing this, it will have to be put before the Dachshund Club Committee as to the future of the Handbook.

It would also be appreciated if everyone could tag in their friends, wherever they may be, to enable the Handbook to continue, and read this letter. It is intended to be a global platform for everyone to advertise their Kennels, and everyone worldwide is invited to take part. Anyone requiring information can contact me for further information.

Neuter status as a risk factor for disc herniation in dachshunds
Our paper on neutering and IVDH was in the top 3 receiving the most online attention in the Journal of Canine Genetics and Epidemiology in 2018. Considering it was only published in November, that's pretty amazing. It was tweeted by 34 people with a reach of 33,000 followers.
The
Open Access paper is available here.
