ART WORK BY: MADHUBANTI CHOWDHURY

ARTHOP JUNE 6TH 5PM-8PM

"To me, art is as natural as breathing. It’s a huge part of my life; whether consuming it in galleries, on websites, discussing with others, experiencing through the power of social media, or creating it for myself. It’s part of the very nature of my whole being, as a person. From the moment I started drawing as a child, it helped me express how I felt about the world around me, or ideas I couldn’t quite articulate.
I am a local artist in Fresno, California. I started my painting journey with traditional Asian Indian pieces in watercolor. I transitioned from watercolor to acrylic six years ago. All my works are in acrylic. I draw inspiration for my artwork from a variety of sources: anything that allows me to think about how culture comes together. I'm always on the lookout – I observe people in the street; I watch films, I read, I think about the conversations that I have and much more. I have a lot of conversation with other people about my work and the works of others. I observe my surroundings acutely and it is through art that I can effectively communicate the world of my feelings and the creativity that only exists within my mind. My artwork celebrates or treasures the local, the small-scale, the eccentric, and the ordinary parts of the human experience. My artwork captures the human experience in abstract form."
Fresno Film Works will also be here at the Fresno Arts Council for ArtHop from 5 p.m - 8p.m

Artist Statement

My work is not only about the product, but about the process to reach that end. The differences that occur between one completed piece and another are a result of constant decision making. I deal with materials as honestly as possible, seeking to develop cohesive surfaces.

Making a painting starts with a trip to the lumber yard to buy wood, glue, screws, nails and staples for the stretcher bars which I make to stretch the canvas onto. A table saw is used to cut the wood. Canvas is ordered and delivered to the house. Next I cut, stretch and prime the canvas. I mention these steps to show the nuts and bolts of art making. My work reflects an interest in finding color relationships which take shape by moving paint around on the canvas. The visual information is very often a surprise and mistakes can be used to further push toward the discovery of new ways to make a picture

My primary goal is to make art that is both closed and open. The art is closed when the surface seems complete. It remains open because it doesn’t necessarily deal with representational imagery. It is its own image, its own idea, and there are questions that haven’t been answered. The end result of my art making is that I have a fragment of reality. It is a piece of something I can hold on to.

Dreams and Fictions: Paintings by Quinn Bowman & Julia Woli Scott
Julia Woli Scott is a contemporary artist known for her atmospheric and delicately layered paintings. Her gestural depictions of human, plant &animal forms inhabit dream-like abstracted landscapes of metaphoric terrain.
Quinn Bowman works with a continually expanding vocabulary of personal symbology that suggests dreams, experiences, and a strained relationship with the human ego. Often simplified and abstracted, the shapes and forms seen within his drawings and paintings are as unassuming as they are significant.
The intersection of their work is found in the sublime; a fascination with that which only exists in dreams & fictions.
At the invitation of Clay Hand Studios, they have created a new body of work that will be on display for the month of June.

For June Art Hop, drawings, paintings, and photographs using alternative processing techniques will be shown in the Doris Gallery at FMAA. Jacqueline Runyon and Nicole Ellis, 2019 graduates of the Fresno State Department of Art and Design, are friends and collaborators, inspiring each other in different ways.
Runyon considers Ellis a muse, she modeled for some of the drawings we exhibit for the period of June/July.
Ellis shows her experiments with alternative photographic techniques used to created camera-less images. Both create layered images expressing and manipulating images of everyday life.

The Rule of Thirds by Joseph Hawkins

Joseph Hawkins, Amateur Landscape and travel photographer.

THEME OF SHOW: A Play on words as the “Rule of Thirds” usually applies to the process if composing visual images dividing the imaged into nine quadrants.  My collection is actually a collecting of threes.  Three photos together each with a common feature, three photos take at three diffierent time - ie before and during and after a storm, three seasons from the same location, three different angles of the same subject, three different national parks etc...

PERTINENT FEATURES: The collection is printed on metal
Ageless Beauty    Newton Seiden
"There and Back" by Newton Seiden

I have had the good fortune to be able to combine two of my strong passions; travel and photography. As my interest in photography has evolved, I realized that photographing a wide range of subjects and settings was both technically challenging and very emotionally satisfying.
This exhibition features some of my favorite landscape, portraiture, wildlife and iPhone photos. While many of these photos were taken during international travel, some of my favorites are shot within 200 miles of home. This is a fine testimonial to the abundant natural wealth that surrounds us in Central California.
I don’t have a complex photographic “philosophy”.
My belief is that there are so many beautifully interesting people and places in the world and I want to photograph as much of it as possible.
For me, photographic success is measured by the emotional response of the viewer. I would hope that this exhibition makes you “feel something”, evokes a moment of curiosity for the “story” that the photo tells or that it  allows you to briefly project yourself into the photo.
As I inch my way along my photographic journey, I have made a conscious effort to resist the natural temptation to narrow the scope of my photography. That self-imposed constraint feels unnatural to me.
I believe that the “creative crossover” that is achieved by remaining a “generalist”, actually improves my photography. It makes me feel more visually nimble and freshens most locales.
Photography is simply great fun and has allowed me to experience extended periods of nearly forgotten childlike joy. It provides me with a sense of anticipation and awareness that is simultaneously stimulating and calming and is akin to dreaming while wide awake.
I have been lucky enough to be able to surround myself with a group of kindred spirits who completely understand and value this wonderful mental state.  We are able to temporarily put aside our established daily adult roles and responsibilities and become adventurous, brave and impervious to the elements. We feel youthful and free. I believe that photography is truly my anti-aging cure!
I invite you to share the fun and enjoy the exhibition.
