First Sureau bursary awarded

The iREx is proud to announce the recipient of its first Sureau bursary, Ariane Deslières. Thanks to a generous donation by Mr. Philippe Sureau, this bursary will allow Ariane to spend part of her summer internship with the iREx at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope.

Bishop’s University has announced that iREx member Prof. Jason Rowe has been awarded the 2019 Emerging Scholar award. The Emerging Scholar awards recognise outstanding researchers and creators whose work has made a significant impact on their disciplines or fields.

Wrap-up of the 2019 Maunakea School

Five Canadian graduate students participated in the Maunakea Graduate School which took place from April 2nd to 13th. These students had the chance to visit the observatories on the summit of Maunakea in Hawaii, interact with astronomers and design their own scientific observing programs.

"Astronomer in your classroom" across MTL

During this year's 24h de science event, the iREx in collaboration with the CRAQ offered the "Astronomer in your classroom" activity. During the week of May 13th, nine astronomers visited 18 elementary school classrooms all across Montreal to talk about space and answer students' questions.

NIRPS Scientific Meeting in Geneva

The Near-InfraRed Planet Searcher (NIRPS) scientific team held a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland in April 2019. During this very productive meeting, the team discussed its research program whose main goal is to find exoplanets orbiting red dwarfs in the Solar neighbourhood.

CFHT and SPIRou meetings in Montréal

Two important scientific meetings took place in Montreal in May: the 12th Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Users' Meeting (celebrating the CFHT's 40th anniversary) and the SPIRou scientific team meeting. Many iREx members, including graduate students, presented their research projects during these meetings.

Upcoming Events

iREx at the Eurêka! Festival


The Centre de recherche en astrophysique du Québec and the iREx will be at the 2019 edition of the Eurêka! Festival Eurêka from June 7th to 9th. The CRAQ booth will be presenting a Voyage to New Worlds. Participants will be invited to discover exoplanets, these celestial objects orbiting stars other than our Sun.

Mont-Mégantic Astronomy Festival


The Mont-Mégantic Astronomy Festival is a unique occasion to let yourself be inspired by astronomy and the stars. The multi-day event will include conferences given by astronomers (including several by iREx members) and nighttime observations at the Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic! This year's theme is "From the Earth to the Moon: the Prodigious Journey".

astroMIL Day

 
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission and the first steps on the Moon, the Université de Montréal will be hosting a day filled with cosmic events at their new campus, the Campus MIL. Join us on July 21st for discussion panels, interactive booths, nighttime observations and many more surprises! More information will be available soon on our website.

"Astronomer for a Night" Contest

 
LAST CHANCE TO APPLY! Have you ever wondered what it's like to be an astronomer? This is your chance to find out! Win the chance to be an astronomer for one night of observing at l'Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic during the Summer of 2019. The contest is open to all Quebec residents who will be in secondary school in 2019-2020. The deadline to apply is June 15th 2019.
