Lord,
Help us to let go and let you order our lives.
Teach us to take responsibility for what we do.
Send us the wisdom to know and to choose right action.

Help us, above all, to be grounded in compassion and love for others.
Amen.

SOUTH WEST CAREERS EXPO
I am very grateful to our Careers and VET staff who have once again excelled in their organisation of the South West Careers Expo.
This annual event is a service to our students, in particular, and students from all schools in the South West, enabling students and families to speak with tertiary education and training providers and major employer groups.
Often the greatest value is when parents and students are together when speaking with the providers.

UPDATE ON PREPARATION FOR 2020 AND TWO SCHOOLS
The planning on the Mercy campus has progressed and I appreciate the staff, students and parents who attended the ‘discovery’ sessions for their insight, thoughts and opinions on the future of the new OLMC.
The discussions were wide and varied and will result in a survey which will be sent to all in the Mercy community.
One area of discussion related to a new uniform for students and this will be opened for community comment as we progress.
As stated previously, we will not have sufficient time to make a decision on the full uniform, source a supplier and put in orders ready for the commencement of the new school year.
It is anticipated that we will be able to make decisions about the new sports uniform ready for the school year and then bring in other items of uniform as the year progresses.
It is expected that the 2020 Year 7 students will start with the sports uniform and will not purchase the existing BCC uniform.
There will be a period of transition and current students will not be expected to purchase the new uniform, though may wish to change when there is a need for a different size.
Any queries about the changes can be posted on the HUB at https://connect.cewa.edu.au/BCC .

ART EXTRAORDINAIRE (Marist campus)
Planning for the 2019 Art Extraordinaire fundraising event is well underway with coordinators for the various roles keeping to the preparation timeline.
Please schedule 18 October 2019, the date for the Opening Night, in your diary and support this fabulous community event.
The funds raised will contribute to the furniture planned for the indoor area in front of the canteen.
This area was refurbished in 2018 with the intention that it will be a multipurpose area used for year group assemblies and a relaxation and study space for students at recess and lunch.

The Art Extraordinaire committee is seeking additional support from parents who will be part of a team to set up the Hall for the event.
This will involve approximately four sessions in September/October.
Parents who are able to assist are asked to contact Mrs Gill Alietti on 9721 0042 or gillian.alietti@cewa.edu.au

LOWER SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS/ASSESSMENTS
Our best wishes to students in Year 7, 8 and 9 who will complete their assessments in the coming week.
Please keep them in your prayers.

God bless

Art Extraordinaire to be renewed
Planning is well under way for our 2019 Art Extraordinaire, held on the first weekend of Term 4.
This is the Marist campus’ biggest annual fundraiser and features art works across a variety of mediums including paintings, craft and sculpture.
The opening night, scheduled for Friday 18 October, is always a highlight and includes a guest speaker, auctions and nibbles.
You may start seeing posters around the College for Art Extraordinaire and we encourage the community to get involved – be it as a volunteer or artist.
Online registration for volunteers and artists is now open through www.bccartex.com.au and more information will be communicated closer to the event.
We also encourage everyone to follow the Facebook page to stay up to date with everything related to Art Extraordinaire.
We are also on Instagram at bccartex.

Careers Expo
Bunbury Catholic College students, along with students from schools as far away as Manjimup and Bridgetown, Collie, Busselton and Margaret River plus the wider community, were at the Marist campus sports centre yesterday for the annual South West Careers Expo.
About 1600 visitors came through the doors and had the chance to speak to more than 40 exhibitors.
These included universities, residential colleges and other higher educational providers, some of the South West's major employers from sectors including mining and local government and diverse exhibitors such as the Defence Force, drone pilot careers and Education USA.
Our student baristas also made coffees for the exhibitors throughout the morning.
Once again, the feedback about the Expo from all visitors and exhibitors was positive.
This is the 11th time we have hosted the Expo since its inception in 2009.
The Expo is growing every year and we thank everybody who was involved.
Education Perfect
In their science classes, Marist campus students from Years 7 to 10 competed in the Education Perfect Science Championships last week.
Students completed 102,752 science questions and it was great to see so much enthusiasm.
Bunbury Catholic College was ranked 36th out of 1561 schools globally.
We were also the 21st ranked school in Australia and fifth best in Western Australia.
The winning students from each year group were:
Year 7 - Flynn Martinson (Gold)
Year 8 - Ebonee Griffin (Bronze)
Year 9 - Herbert Amponsah (Bronze)
Year 10 - Brian Pham (Credit)
The science class with the most points was Homeroom 7.6 who gained 17,273 points which ranked them 273rd in this global challenge.
The top two students from 7.6 - Flynn Martinson and Marcus Fornal - were awarded the ‘Golden Wholly Spoon’ in recognition of the separating techniques that they have been doing in their science class.
A special mention goes to Zakary Sutherland from the Mercy campus who achieved an Elite award which placed him 92nd in the world for the competition.

Marcellin Day
Mercy students from our yellow house paraded into assembly on Tuesday morning and enjoyed food, activities and entertainment during lunch time.
The Marist campus celebrated Marcellin Day on Thursday, which coincided with St Marcellin Champagnat's Feast Day.
Marcellin Day was the third of the College's House Days for 2019 with the remaining house - McAuley - to have their day in the spotlight in August.
A message from cafe manager Mrs Tania Evans:
  • Due to the terrible flu season we are currently experiencing, I am struggling to find enough helpers in the café, as parents are either looking after their sick children, themselves or perhaps taking on extra shifts at work as colleagues are home sick.
  • This in itself makes the café busier as parents choose to purchase from the café rather than make lunches. Who doesn’t want something warm for recess and lunch when the weather is as cold as it is at the moment?
  • If you have a spare couple of hours, and are able to lend a helping hand, it would be much appreciated.
  • The café cannot run as smoothly as it does without your assistance.
  • Please contact 9720 3300 if you can help.

Learning Commons turns medieval
The Medieval Castle event was created to support the Year 8 History Curriculum.
The Learning Commons was transformed into ten sources, each focusing on a different area of the medieval program.
Activities relating to the ten sources were available to staff and students.
These were designed to complement the teaching of the curriculum in the classroom and included stained glass, crosses, coat of arms, rules for the castle gate and a timeline of ancient to modern world.
Student work was added to the display as they progressed through the unit so it was displayed in a meaningful context.
The Year 8 students will be completing a history essay and this display created an additional resource for their research.
Our goal in the Learning Commons is to create interactive displays that encourage engagement and contribution by students.

Ration Challenge
Staff, students, siblings and parents of the Bunbury Catholic College community will partake in the Act For Peace Ration Challenge next week.
This challenge coincides with Refugee Week and involves eating only the rations that are provided to Syrians in refugee camps in Jordan.
We are raising awareness and money to provide food, medicine and education for those who need it most.
Adults and children take on different forms of the challenge but all will be pushed to live on a small amount of rice, kidney beans, lentils, sardines, chickpeas and flour.
I was able to view a live video of ration packs being given out in the refugee camps and the gratitude of the refugees was most evident.
The response from the Bunbury Catholic College community has been overwhelming and about $8000 has been raised so far.
Twenty students have signed up to take on the challenge as well as three staff members, five parents, one past student and one future student.
We have also been blessed with the entire Congdon family taking part and they have taken lovely photos while opening one of the ration packs.
If you would like to sponsor the participants in this challenge or would like to know any more about it, click the link: https://school.rationchallenge.org.au/bunbury-catholic-college
Our sincerest thanks go to all that have donated to this most worthy cause and we wish the participants all the best in this challenge.
Our next newsletter will feature feedback from the challenge as well as photos of participants with their meals and activities during Refugee Week.

Boys basketball
Bunbury Catholic College took on an undermanned Manea Senior College last Friday in the College gym.
Will Sykes completely dominated the scoreboard with an impressive 35 points, while he, Finn Reid and Dylan Rodwell also blocked several of Manea’s shots.
Jack Pergoliti found his range and shot a quick fire 12 points including back-to-back three pointers.
Reid was busy at both ends and contributed nine points.
Year 12 students Rodwell (eight points) and Jaxon Frisina (four points) played strong defence and passed the ball extremely well in what is likely to be their last hit out for BCC.
Brady Lenaghan played some excellent defence, made great position under the basket and contributed four points.
Our thanks to Mitchell Russell for filling in for Manea so that we could have a game, and to Ms Bastow for her organisation and for umpiring.
Girls basketball
The College's girls basketball team played away to Dalyellup College last week.
The girls played extremely well and put on a solid score, winning the game 44-10.
Chloe Scott (14 points) and Javene Fitch (12 points) were great in the post and running out in fast breaks.
They were well supported by Sophia Tomas (eight points) and Eloise Brown (seven points).
Upcoming Sports
The last few weeks of term are jam packed with carnivals and after school sporting events.
Now in its last game, the Champions Schools Cup soccer teams have had three games against Manea Senior College, Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School, Australind Senior High School.
Our teams will finish against Bunbury Senior High School next Wednesday.
The ACC Year 7 Football Carnival in week nine will see both girls and boys playing against teams from across the South West and Peel regions.
The carnival will be held at Hay Park with the boys and girls competing in a combined 15 games.
The ACC Hockey Carnival will be played on 20 June at the Hay Park hockey fields.
David Norrish will coach the boys side and Courtney Barton will coach the girls.
Also in week 9 is the South West High Schools Netball Cup.
Best of luck to the Years 7-8 and 9-10 teams from both campuses and their coaches Liana Perrella, Cassandra Shine, Renae Pere and Jacinta Tap.
Skippers
Congratulations to the Year 12 Cert II in Outdoor Recreation students who completed their Skippers Tickets in testing conditions last Thursday 6 June.
Students had to prove competency in both theoretical and practical aspects of boat handling and safety and have done well to complete a highly-regarded certificate.

Sports Stars
Congratulations to Kyle Lee who has been selected in the Western Australian School Sports Swimming team. Kyle will compete in late July in Melbourne at the School Sports Australia National Championships.

Congratulations also to Luke Hutchinson who is playing in the Nationals for the 15s indoor cricket state team in Melbourne through the July school holidays.

This is an incredible achievement for both students who also will be receiving points towards the Sports Star award.
Please remember to let the school know if your child has achieved a similar level of representation.

Cross Country
Our annual cross country will be held for both campuses in week nine., on Tuesday 25 June at Mercy and Friday 28 June at Marist. All parents are welcome to come along and support their children during their race and presentations.
Both events will be held in the morning and students will be sent information about their year group start times.
In order to make the SSWA Interschool Cross Country team, the top five boys and girls from each campus across the line per year group will take part in a match race at a later date, as we can only take the top five competitors across both campuses.
The reason for a qualifying match race is that our courses are separate and run on separate days.

Trinity selected for prestigious science event
Bunbury Catholic College's 2018 dux and Kelderman Award winner Trinity Mangano, pictured left, has been selected to attend the Asian Science Camp in China next month.
This is a prestigious event attended by only 200 students from around the world and Trinity will be one of only five from Australia to attend.
Trinity's previous achievements in science - which include high distinctions in two Earth and Environmental Science Olympiad exams and attending an EES Summer School in Canberra while at the College - made her a standout candidate for this camp.
In addition to great young minds, she will also be surrounded by Nobel laureates during the six-day camp.
We congratulate Trinity on earning selection and wish her the best for a wonderful experience.
She was also interviewed by the South Western Times for an article which should be published next week.
