Hello, Lean In Community!

It has been a spiritually refreshing month - with our Muslim friends immersed in Ramadhan, and with Lean In Malaysia launching a Mental Health and Wellness Masterclass. For the first time since our inception, we launched a Masterclass that sparked vital awareness around "It's okay to not be okay." Participants joined in an authentic conversation about our collective struggles, our emotional state, and what it takes to just be human.

As fellow Malaysians embark on familial celebrations in June, let us take this time to reflect upon our collective well-being, and to connect further with our communities--we for one are deeply grateful for the ever-growing community of Lean In Malaysia.

Selamat Hari Raya!

With Love,

#Throwback: Lean In Masterclass

It’s Okay To Not Be Okay.

Our Lean In Malaysia (LIM)'s inaugural Mental Health Masterclass, held in collaboration with Gender Equality & Diversity Committee (GEDC) of the Kuala Lumpur Bar and supported by the Australian High Commission was well-received and a huge success!

Lean In Malaysia acknowledges the importance of mental health and the severe impact on physical health, as there is a correlation between mental health and chronic diseases. With the competitive work environment today, most working professionals face immense pressure and stress at the workplace — which takes a toll on their mental health. Unfortunately, society views mental health negatively, which provides a deterrence for people to seek help and support.

The mental health masterclass aims to break this stigma and encourages people to start speaking out about their own mental health. As this was a collaboration between LIM and GEDC, the majority of the targeted audience was lawyers. It was highlighted how the rising work stress and demanding workload and hours may have caused burnout, anxiety, stress, and depression amongst lawyers in the law industry.

The masterclass was a half-day programme kickstarted by a captivating 1-hour panel discussion with Co-Founder of Naluri, Azran Osman; Managing Partner of Wong & Partners, Andre Gan and Head of Ethics of Celcom Axiata Berhad, Eulis Rachmatiah; and moderated by Daisy Ng, Co-President of Lean In Malaysia and 1.5 hours of workshop by Naluri on dealing with stress, opening up about our own mental health and responding to people who have reach out to us about their mental health issues.

We hope to conduct more masterclasses on this theme in the near future!

Get practical tips from May Teoh Soo Mei, who is a successful HR professional raising three kids and juggling a busy schedule.

Senior Manager in Learning & Development, Group Talent Management, Ecoworld

1. How do you manage your time in switching the roles as a mum, a wife, and a breadwinner?
Professionally, I’m a Senior Manager in Learning & Development, Group Talent Management at EcoWorld. On the personal front, I’ve been married for 12 years and am a mother of 3 children: one 5-year-old boy and 2-year-old fraternal twins.

Firstly, I’d like to stress the importance of having a strong support system at home. I’m blessed to have a supportive spouse who takes care of household matters, a helpful mum who takes care of my twins at home, and a reliable and hardworking maid.

Secondly, I use the tool "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" in both my professional and personal lives. The tool has helped me manage my priorities around my roles and has helped me lead a life based on principles of effectiveness. Most importantly, by finding the right tool that works for me, I’m able to manage the best of both worlds — at work and at home.

So, at the end of the day, how do I do it? I believe in spending quality time with my family and loved ones whenever I can. I’m also blessed that I have a passion for my work — I love nurturing and developing people. This passion gives me the energy to execute my work as best as I can.

2. What was the biggest challenge you have ever encountered in your life? How did you overcome it?

I’ve always been a risk-taker and possess strong determination and willpower to overcome any challenges. The biggest challenge I had to overcome was during my second pregnancy with the twins — I had to take jabs of glucose test 5-6 times every day starting from my 5th month of pregnancy. During this time, I was still working and had to travel outstation as a trainer, and stand and walk around for hours — I was still delivering training around my 8th month of pregnancy! All I can say is that it’s all in your mind. Whatever your mind can conceive, you can achieve it and be able to withstand all the forthcoming challenges.
3. What is your advice to our readers who are juggling multiple roles every day?
Mothers experience a lot of stress but it is important that we love and take care of ourselves too. This is very important because if we fall sick, we won’t be able to perform our roles as mothers. So, how can we take care of others if we are not well and can’t even take care of ourselves?

I highly recommend mothers to find time to do things that make you happy and keep improving in these four areas — physical, mental, emotions/social, and spiritual. We need to recognize that our own needs for fulfilment are legitimate. We also need to believe that we can “have it all” and can orchestrate our conflicting demands and roles in order to lead a fulfilling life.
